Climbing is probably the #1 thing that scares me to see my kids do (climbing ladders, trees, etc). I did it all the time as a kid, but it scares me to watch my oldest do it, even though I know she's completely able to.

By the time I was 4 or 5 (certainly before elementary school) I was allowed to play alone outside, and go on adventures around our (10 combined acre) property with my cousin who was 4 years older than me. We were also allowed to go to the crick behind my grandma's house alone (it was probably almost a mile into the woods behind my grandma's house). One time when I was maybe 8 or so myself and my cousin (then 12) decided to explore the woods behind the creek and we got lost and wound up on the other side of the (laaarge rural) block and we had to walk all the way around the block, along the road with no sidewalks and a 55 mph speed limit, because we were worried we couldn't find our way back through the woods. We were gone for hours and my parents and grandparents were freaking out.
