Ours goes to bed consistently at 8. He wakes up between 6:30 and 7...more 7 since school started. I would want to have him asleep by 7:30 if I was in your shoes but I don’t think it would change easily. And I can’t imagine having him down by 7 and we eat pretty early.

We try to have ours in bed by 745ish, but she often doesn't fall asleep for a while. Probably not until 8:30 or so. She has been waking up later and later, too. Like 745/8 am! I have to wake her up at 7:30 at the very latest for school starting next week, so maybe she'll start falling asleep earlier. Fingers crossed.

6:30 am - 7:30 pm sounds reasonable to me. You might have to wait it out a bit, though, before it becomes his natural rhythm.

@Grace: “falls asleep fairly quickly” doesn’t exist for my 6 year old unless I give her melatonin.
We will be in the same boat with my 6 year old next week when she starts. I think she’ll have to be up by 6:45 to make the bus. Right now bedtime is 7:30-8, but I know it takes her a while to fall asleep. I can’t imagine pushing it earlier, she just wouldn’t fall asleep anyway. She is almost always already awake when her clock lights up at 7 so I don’t think it will be a big change. Well just have to get up and get moving right away.

@Grace: she probably could go to bed later but I think it usually takes a while for her to fall asleep no matter what- and I am the same way and have been since as long as I can remember. Like 3rd grade I can remember it. She listens to calming music and eventually falls asleep. But if I put her to bed later she wakes up at least as early if not earlier so not good.

Kindergarten we aimed to start bedtime at 7 and he was usually asleep by 7:30, awake around 6-6:30. First grade we started bedtime at 7:30 and he was asleep by 8, awake by 6:30. Second grade so far he is in bed at 8 and asleep in just a few minutes. Usually I wake him up at 6:45.

He shares a room with his 2.5 year old brother so it’s hard to do bedtime earlier. If I put them to bed together it’s a disaster. So the little one needs to be asleep before the big one.

@wrkbrk: My 18 mo sleeps max 10 hours on a good night, often its closer to 9. And he's usually the first one to wake up from nap at school. I thought for a long time I must be doing something wrong but eventually came to the conclusion that this is just the amount of sleep he needs and nothing will extend it 🤷‍♀️ Pregnant me needs a good nine hours of sleep but there are chores to do after bedtime

@wrkbrk: It is a little magical! My now 6.5 year old was never a great sleeper (like didn't sleep through the night until 18 months, got up at 5 am for years after that), but now I have to drag her out of bed at 7:30. I'm hoping that some day my 3.5 year old will also get there, because she still gets up in the 5 o'clock hour every day.

During the school year, bed time is 8pm (kids sleep pretty quickly) and they will be up around 6am-6:30. Occasionally DD1 sleeps longer like till 7, but not often. They have to leave the house at 8 for the 5 minute walk to school. Doors close at 8:10.

@wrkbrk: lol my real life friends don’t understand that when I say I’ve literally never had to wake my kids up in the morning I mean it! Mine still wake between 5 and 6 am even in first grade and no matter what time bedtime is.

@ALV91711: Thanks for asking this question - I have been struggling a bit with bedtime-timing here too. So we currently have a pretty sweet spot were all 4 go to bed together. Usually we aim for 7:30-8pm. Although lately DS1 will often roam about and not sleep until 8:30pm or even later. He gets up at 6:45am or 7am at the latest. I hope he'll be able to fall asleep faster once it's not as light out and it's cooler again...

We aim for about 11-12 hours of sleep, but it takes my daughter awhile to fall asleep. Typically lights out between 6:30-7:00 and I'd say she's usually asleep 7:30-8:00. She wakes up around 6:30. If it's been a few days of trouble sleeping, she will crash more quickly, maybe asleep by 7:00. VERY occasionally she will sleep in, and I wake her up around 7:00.
The bus picks her up right at 8:00 and I'm a SAHM so our dinner schedule is flexible.

@ALV91711: it’s so hard to juggle all the schedules. It will be a transition for sure but it won’t always feel that way. You will get really good at quick dinners

My first grader is in the shower at 7pm, little sister takes a bath after her, then stories for both and lights out. They share a room. Lights out probably at 7:45ish. They have to get up at 6:45 to get the older to school on time. Today, the 3yo wasn't having it. She went back to sleep, which thankfully was fine, because I could stay home and hang until she woke up around 8.

ahhhhhhh.....my kids were both tired last night, so they were asleep by 7:30. And then they were both up at 6 sharp, which is mildly annoying, because I'd prefer they sleep until 6:15-6:30. Since I leave for work at 6:45, I need some alone time to shower and dry my hair, etc.

Tonight, I'm going to try 8pm again and hope they sleep till 6:30 at least (since tomorrow is a weekend!).
