Lo is 4w old today..
For a few days now he has been snoring because his snore is so stuffed. I can see boogies in there but I can't reach all of them with the nose frieda (I've tried picking his nose for him too) :).
I give him vapor baths and that seems to help loosen them up and get them out but it is only very temporary.
I have considered a Vick's cool humidifier but I don't know if that'll really help.
Can I use any medicine? (I don't really want to)
We don't see his ped again until Friday.

Saline spray and a nose sucker! Use the saline to flush things out first and then go in with the NoseFrida.
You can also try putting him in the bathroom while you shower. Steam will help.
You can also put Vicks on the bottom of his feet and put socks on him. It helps ease congestion and inflammation.

@zippylef: On the bottle of Vick's it says 2yrs and older...but that isn't a big deal? I mean, honestly how would rubbing Vick's on a newborn's feet hurt them?

We have the same problem and its because the air is too dry and she gets all mucusy. We bought a cool moisture humidifier per our doc's recommendation. She said buy a cheap one because you'll end up not being able to clean it properly for mold and mildew and you'll just have to chuck it and buy a new one. We bought a Vicks one...and it totally worked on her stuffiness, but the damn thing leaked the first night. We are going to have to return it and get a new one.

Saline + Nosefrida
I went to a meetup where a naturopathic doctor recommended something called magic socks. Basically put wet socks on your baby and then a pair of dry socks over top (you could warm them up in the dryer) and have him wear the socks overnight. It sounds horribly uncomfortable but it's supposed to work wonders.

I have these baby nose tweezers.
I just reach in there when he's sleeping and pick them out! Pretty easy.

She hates and fights the saline now, so we do steam rooms. I turn the shower on as hit as it will go and we sit on the steamy bathroom until stuff starts running out of her nose.

saline spray!! we have so many different ones. She hates them all but they work, we even have a saline nebulizer now because she was so congested. Also the vicks steam vaporizer is great or steam from the shower

@mediagirl: I haven't tried it myself because I haven't been sick lately, but the lactation consultant that runs the meetup I went to said she's done the magic socks before and it worked well for her! You should try it for sure! There are good tips in the link.

Baby safe saline drops + NoseFrida. If it's truly bad, hanging out in the bathroom while running the shower for steam helps.

@Sammyfab: I never heard of that! DD and I both have a cold right now, but she is already asleep so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try this. It does sound uncomfortable though.

i like steamy showers. it really loosens up the boogers and helps with congestion. i pat olive's back while the water is running. then i nosefrida.
olive doesn't have a cough or i would put baby vicks on feet and cover with socks.

@Chastenet: you should try it on yourself tonight! I think the initial feeling of the cold wet socks on your feet is uncomfortable but it lasts for a short amount of time and the dry socks over top help alleviate the discomfort. I never sleep with socks though so I don't know how I'd handle it if I ever tried it!

@Sammyfab: my naturopath suggested the sock thing to us too- I will totally be trying that next time we get a cold around here.
Another thing you can try (if you're brave enough) is breastmilk in the nose then snot suck. I find it works even better than saline and it really kicks the cold so much faster.

Saline drops and steam shower should help. When my oldest got sick the very first time and was so congested I nursed him in our steam shower. Otherwise, he had a hard time nursing. I was so afraid it would affect my supply so we sat fully-clothed in our steam shower. My husband thought I was weird.

@bebefly: sure that's happened but I don't think I could actually aim I to her nostril. I ended up hand expressing into a bottle and using a syringe. Can't say that it helped though as dd is now running a low fever and dr sent me to the er

Saline drops (which she hates) and a warm mist humidifier by vicks that has spots to drop in vicks tabs so the smell is in the air. It seems to help her. We have a cool mist humidifier as well (overkill) but I like using the warm mist when it's a chilly night or her stuffiness is bad. I just broke down and ordered the nose frida today. I cannot get much of anything out with the regular bulb.
