Me, DH and my parents are flying to my brother and SIL's for for a week as they host Thanksgiving for both families. My mom said that my SIL's parents have always given them thoughtful gifts whenever they visit, so my mom wants to return the favor. Trouble is, she is at a loss for what to get them.
Any thoughts? They are Asian, if that makes any difference, and they like to line dance. They don't drink.. I know that's not a lot to

Maybe something for the home like nice candles or photo albums? Or if they like coffee, tea, chocolates maybe your parents can put together a nice basket of items.

Hm ah Ok, I get it now. Hm. Asian parents don't really like frivolous things. They're very practical! Does it have to be for both or can it be two individual gifts?
Do they like to cook? Can you ask SIL for ideas?
Personally my mom is really into moisturizer, night creams, blemish creams etc now. So maybe if your mom has a favorite moisturizer or night cream she can buy SIL mom that. That way it's also a conversation opener. Hey I really like this, thought you might too?

I love receiving a really nice box of chocolates or really nice candles (they're expensive!). Williams Sonoma has nice gift sets. Or if you have local goodies from your area to put in a nice gift basket (we always include almond roca bc it's made in WA).
I think no matter what they'll appreciate the gesture. I know my Asian parents really appreciate the effort/thought more than the gift itself...bc the older Asian generation tends to be a lot about honor/respect. My husband can do no wrong bc they know he's trying so hard to respect their culture

What about a ceramic tea set? Are they the tea drinking type? A big box of Asian pears is usually a sign of respect and gratitude too. That is a super Asian thing to do.
I think even a box of chocolates or gift basket or anything along those lines can't fail. Everything Sandy said is true - a lot of times it's more about the gesture than the actual gift for Asian parents!
