We have a tradition in our family that the kids always make a Christmas craft for everyone. Since R will only be 9 months, it needs to be something with her hand or feet. Since her hand print didn't go so well on her pumpkin, I want to stick with her foot.
I found this reindeer on pinterest. I think it is really cute. I was going to do a red pom pom for the nose. What can I do her foot print on? I was hoping to make an ornament.
I need something on the cheaper side since we have 20 to make.

You could do it in salt dough and then decorate to look like Rudolph.
Or you could do it on a glass ornament. I did this with some mom friends the other day. We got clear glass balls from Michaels. We coated the insides with a thin layer of Pledge floor cleaner (random, I know, but we got the idea from a Pinterest tutorial) and then shook some glitter around the inside until it was coated. Then, on the outside, we used non-toxic craft paint to print our babies' hands or feet. Some left them just as hand/footprints and others turned them into snowmen, Christmas trees, reindeer etc.

If you do a cinnamon dough recipe, you wouldn't have to paint them brown!

@Smurfette: DD's feet are really big (they were 3 3/4" at birth!). So we did her hand on the ball ornament because her foot wouldn't have fit. You could definitely do salt dough though!

@Smurfette: as in, dry before you could get all the prints done? I'm not sure...we just did one. Then baked it low for oh idk an hour or two maybe?

@sorrycharlie: I was thinking those small wood plaques? You could paint them white then do the footprint in brown. And just attach a ribbon to the back to hang them. But that might be kinda heavy!

@Bao: Does the dough dry fast? So I have time to shape the ornament, punch a hole for the ribbon, and then do her foot? Would it be better to do in batches?

@Smurfette: I did salt dough handprints a week or so ago. You definitely will have time to roll it out, punch a hole and do her foot. You dry/harden the shape in the oven. Don't be like me and turn the oven heat up higher to quicken the process - doing so made a couple of mine brown!

You can do cinnamon dough like what @looch: suggested. You can get cinnamon at the dollar store I believe.

@cmomma17: So they totally didn't turn out!! We pressed her foot down but you still can't see it really well. And the ornaments are huge:(

How about using an embroidery hoop and some fabric? You can stretch the fabric over the hoop and tighten it to hold the fabric then just use paint to make the footprint. Although, it might be better to make the footprint first. I can't remember how we used to do it.
We used the wooden ones to make ornaments when I was a kid. I think the hoops come in a bunch of different sizes.

@Smurfette: I am sorry to hear that! It might not be a cheap way to do it but Crayola Model Magic is great for this type of thing. The ornaments come out super light even if they wind up on the big side. You can buy colored dough or you can paint it. In years past I have had the kids put their handprints on it and then painted the indents with glitter glue and I write their name and the year on it with sharpie in cute handwriting.

@Smurfette: I had the same problem - the dough was too stiff to get a good impression. I am going to try again with another recipe before giving up though.

@Smurfette: I'm sorry I missed your question and I'm sorry they didn't turn out! I always use a silipat when baking, wich is a silicone baking mat.
To get C's hand print to really show I had to roll the dough thick enough that I could make a thick imprint

@cmomma17: yeah I think it was too much flour bum going to try the other one you posted that was more like half flour half salt. Plus I was doing it by myself so holding C with one arm and trying to push her hand one with the other. I'm going to try when Dh is home next time!

@Smurfette: Not super thick-- maybe half an inch, or slightly less? I tested my fingerprint in it first, to make sure it was easy enough to do, before bringing LO over, and like I said, I had DH hold her so I could put her hand down and push. But she's still pretty little so her hand print isn't huge-- I used a medium drinking glass to cut out the circle. Tip-- cut the circle out after doing the handprint, not the other way around (if you do circles).

@Smurfette: what about doing the footprint on card stock type paper and then framing it with some sort of painted/decorated wood or Popsicle sticks? Kind of like this:

So I ended up buying really thin canvas frame from amazon. The 5x7 were cheaper then the 4x6, so they are a little bug. I was going to make the antlers really big but they looked better smaller. So I wish I centered them more. Oh well! I am sure our families will still think they are cute!
