This is our first detached house with private garden. I don't think we could ever go back as we've had some rubbish people to share a wall with in the past

Single family with private yard.

free standing house with a private yard, but our yard is really small (.1 acre) so it isn't really a lot of maintenance at all.

Apartment. I like minimal responsibilities with renting. Our current city is very expensive for buying, so we will never own here. I don't like that we live above a bar, but we are moving soon.

Single family home with a yard...it's what we're renting and what we're buying. We don't mind the lawn care.

I live in a semi-detached home with it's own backyard.

We do not mind the yard maintenance and would like to have a similar sized yard or bigger when we move to a detached home in a year or so.

Also, sharing a wall isn't so bad, but we literally have a solid cinder-block wall between us and our neighbours, so we rarely hear or smell anything. I wouldn't want to live in a townhouse/semi-detached that just had drywall inbetween personally.

We own the whole home, but we rent out the basement (currently it's not rented and we use it as a guest space for when SIL is visiting). We don't share the yard with our tenants, but they have a parking space in our driveway.

@kjpugs: We live in a rented townhouse before we owned a single family with a decent sized yard. We also hired landscapers to mow the lawn and take care of the gardens. rake leaves, etc. I hate yardwork. And I don't miss a yard with a million playgrounds for J.

We rent a townhouse, and while it is big and has lots of storage space, the shared wall thing is a big issue for us, and we'll probably move when our lease is up. Moving with what will be a 3-month old sounds awful... but so are our neighbors!

FWIW, I have lived in townhouses with shared walls before and never heard a peep - I think it really depends on who you are sharing walls with.

Single family home with yard -- corner lot.

No yard but we get out everyday and we are surrounded by parks, lakes, playgrounds... an upscale outdoor mall and restaurants and coffee and sushi and downtowns endless glories and los school and target and the university... love it! We only share one wall, which is nice.

We live in a mid-terrace (I think you would call that a row house?) with a huge back garden.

We live in a six-flat, condo building in a city. There's a shared yard.

Single family home with private yard. We want more land though!

Single-family house with a pretty small yard. Our lot is about 5000 sq ft and the house takes up 1/3 of that. The yards are split pretty evenly between the front (nice to look at but we don't use it much because it's on a busy-ish street for our neighborhood) and the back (half brick patio, half grass). I like that we have a fair amount of outdoor space for being in the city, but it's still pretty low-maintenance. I grew up in the countryside where my parents have 5 acres, 2 of which is developed, and it seemed like my dad was ALWAYS mowing the lawn!

@kjpugs: $86 a month?!?!?! Crazytown! I must have been getting ripped off last summer when I paid $160 a month! Anyway, we live in a single family home with a large yard for the area (.22 acres) and mowing is a PITA. Yards are overrated.

We live in a multi-unit condo building (4 units total) with no yard. Just up the street is a park and not too far away is another park with more equipment.
