I heard a range of things:
- The baby likes being hot
- The baby's diaper rash is caused by a fungus - You should use a different cream
- You need to stop eating gassy veggies
What unsolicited advice did you get over the holidays?

Eat more, don't you want your daughter to be healthy?
I had to listen to my MIL give my SIL advice...
A GRAY CRIB? Oh, that is very interesting....the baby won't like it!

"You shouldn't travel because my niece had a similar due date in March and she had her baby on Christmas Day so you are probably going to go into premature labor if you keep traveling." REALLY?!?!

NONE because we were home, just the 2 of us, since our families live outside our allowed 1-hour-from-the-hospital radius!

We didn't receive much advice, we were instead asked the same questions over and over again..."Is he sleeping through the night?" "Was he fussy when his teeth came in?" "How is he napping?" "How much does he weigh?"
Sigh...I know they're just trying to make conversation but I wish I could make a sign and have LO wear it with the answers!

My grandpa told me that when we had kids we needed to make sure my dad bought a high chair to keep at his house, which was super random. Then my mom (separate event) kept putting out a bounty for the first girl grandchild (since my 2nd nephew was born yesterday). As if I could choose!?! Since we've been TTC for quite awhile (secretly) all of this baby talk gets annoying.

Over thanksgiving my MIL told me babies don't like wearing sleepers. After I had sewn a bunch!

7 o'clock is too early of a bedtime. It's not ideal to wait until 6 months to start wean! Big babies need more food and should eat solids at 2 months O_O

Are you waking him up to feed? You shouldnt, you should be letting him sleep through the night. Um yeah he's two weeks okd people.

Oh, also was told that newborns don't need clothes, just diapers and blankets. Which might be true in the summer, but baby is due I January in Montana, where it was 1 degree the other day!! And that you shouldn't buy newborn clothes because people will give them to you. Baby is due in 2 weeks. Amount of newborn clothes given: one sleeper.
I don't think the 4-5 sleep n plays, 3-4 infant gowns, and ONE outfit (fleece pants and cotton shirt, not even something that cute!) are overkill!!

I think this is one of the joys of not having family in the area! We did Skype with them yesterday, but we managed to escape the unsolicited advice.
@jedeve: Who told you that newborns don't need clothes?! That is silly!

"You're not getting any younger. Hurry up and have a second [baby]."

She does not need a nap! Does she look tired to you?
You're supposed to be loud while baby is sleeping so she can get used to sleeping through anything.
If you don't let her go to strangers and cry it out (major stranger anxiety) then she will be attached to you her whole life.

Ha ha! This is making me glad we only saw family via Skype. I was told last month though that I should let my then three week old cry it out!!!

My LO isn't here yet, but I got lots of pregnancy advice.
"Now that you're in your third trimester, you shouldn't be walking up and down stairs. Stop doing that. *looks at my husband* Don't let her do that!"
Um, my bedroom is downstairs and the kitchen is upstairs - what am I supposed to do exactly, teleport?
"You don't look very big for being 28 weeks, you need to eat!"
"What?! You still have almost three months to go?! But... you look ready to pop!"
"I can't believe you're going to take that baby away from it's great-grandparents and move overseas again. *dirty look* That's just cruel. You need to stay in the USA for a few years."

At 35 weeks I got lots of "You need to eat more, your eating for two"
Really? Im huge, my stomach feels like its tearing, my stomach is now in my chest...not much room for food people. GEES!!!
@Rubies: I was getting that last year to have my first child. I think thats so rude. Was from a friend though, not family.

@Arden: wow I'm speechless at the ones you got, especially the last one!

We went to 4 houses over Christmas and I don't think we got one word of advice. I'm pretty sure I have "Eff off" tattooed across my forehead.

None yet b/c my MIL is coming tomorrow. LOL! She's not all that bad but she always says my LO is hungry when he's crying. Then she'll ask out loud if I'm done feeding him (gesturing her breasts).
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
"She's not hungry!" ummmm my child only really really cries when she's hungry. So you let me know if you find another way to make her happy.
pomegranate / 3643 posts
@calsmom: no. I think it's part of that "you're a first time mom, so you are probably just obsessing about stuff unnecessarily" mindset people get!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: yeah, because stranger anxiety won't sort itself out. Tons of 30 year olds still live with their mothers *rolls eyes*
I got:
- she can't eat that, it's too tough to chew (she loves gnawing on roast beef)
- well she's hungry (every time she made a noise)
- she's crying (away from home in a playpen, cried a little before falling to sleep)
- she's still crying (yes I know, it's been like 2 minutes, give her a second she'll settle!!)
- she can't sleep in that sweater can she?
Well meaning but makes me CRAZY
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
You need to give her solids she's too skinny. Umm LO isn't even 4 months old yet! "Well I raised a few kids in my day" annoying!!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
He goes to bed too early (7/730)
He has too many naps (3, he's 7 months)
He is wearing too many layers (it's winter in Boston!)
honeydew / 7589 posts
Just got some more wonderful advice today.... *sarcasm*
"You've got to stop eating spicy food like that. Don't you think about the baby? Spicy food can hurt the baby!!!"
Seriously? Yeah, my unborn child is going to be horribly damaged by a chipotle pepper...
