Sooo wonderful. I grew up in Orange County California so the weather was always good and even though we lived in a trailer park the surrounding neighborhoods were filled with fancy houses with elaborate decorations and good treats. My mom was a super creative person so we always had great elaborate costumes and my dad took us trick or treating dressed as Groucho almost every year till we were about 9 and 10. We made a killing and every year they gave out a coupon fro a free burger at Carls Jr. so we would sit and eat our free burger and enjoy our bounty afterwards. It was the best. I didn't have the easiest childhood but holidays were always something special.

oh and we always got to eat all of our candy too.

I don't think my mom bought any costumes for me

I was a baby one year -pigtails and a pacifier and doll
Witch- mom painted my face green I wore black clothes and had a hat
Cheerleader - wore my sisters uniform

I went with friends - no parents

One house gave out dollars - we loved that house!

We also ate all our candy!

My mom made our costumes! I had a plastic candy bucket, but my brothers used pillow cases (more candy!). We lived in a neighborhood of old people that loved children, so we got lots of good stuff... dollars, quarters, full-size candy bars, bags of chips! My mom always went with us.

we went to church harvest parties, then handed out evangelical gospel tracts to the people who came trick-or-treating at our house.

needless to say, it was very, very sad.

We usually had home made costumes. Always had hot dogs for dinner before trick or treating. Then friends and dads would meet at our house to go trick or treating. Moms stayed home to hand out candy.

@Leialou: yes, i am. my mom has kept her mouth shut about it, but she's probably not a huge fan. luckily she's loosened up since my childhood! but my daughter was gifted a halloween coloring book that has some (friendly) ghosts and skeletons in it, and my mom was mortified and hid it.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Ha! When I was like 7 my mom stopped taking me trick or treating, because some pastor preached on how trick or treating was evil the Sunday before Halloween! My mom sat me down and told me we couldn't go because Jesus doesn't like Halloween, and I lost my mind. So upset. I already had my costume and everything! My brothers were older, so they didn't care. We did "trunk or treat" every year after that.

My mom has since come around, thankfully! She was a young Christian then, so she was easily influenced. She went trick or treating with us last year, and she's going again this year!

We had a big box of play/dress-up clothes so I usually just raided that for a costume. It was usually a moot point, since I grew up in the mountains and it was very cold and often times snowy the night of Halloween--my mom would make me wear a ski suit with hat, gloves, boots, the whole works. 95% of my halloween costumes wound up being "skiier" by default. The local middle school had a community spaghetti dinner that we always went to, and then my dad would take us trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. I used one of those plastic buckets that a happy meal came in back in the 80s.

My dad took us trick-or-treating every year. I don't ever remember my parents buying us a costume, so I always had to come up with my own with whatever I had lying around. I never thought anything of it though! We would sit around the table sorting our candy with our dad... we usually ate some and hoarded the rest, but nobody dictated what we could/couldn't do with them. My mom was always working so she never participated, but I have fond memories of the holiday with my dad.

My mom made my costumes for years. We would go around our neighborhood with pillowcases for candy. We got to eat it all and my brother and I would have candy fights, throwing candy we didn't want at each other from our bedrooms.

My mom made us awesome costumes (some I remember are cheerleader, 50s girl, Jem :-D) We'd go out with neighborhood kids and friends who drove over with parents trailing behind. As we got older we'd go with big groups of friends, sometimes with a parent driving around behind us. Then usually a parent would plan a little party after trick or treating with dinner and games. Lots of fun memories.

So much fun! My school had a "dance" usually a couple of nights before Halloween, and we dressed up like witches and ghosts and wore simple costumes. Then on Halloween night, we would go out with friends (never parents) and go trick or treating in the neighbourhood. We would get so much candy and spend the next couple of days at school showing off and eating our candy. We also did tricks if someone didn't say treat!

Halloween today is lame.

ETA: I forgot to add that sometimes we would go to parties and there would be tons of candy apples and Halloween games.

Halloween in my neighborhood growing up was the BEST! It's a neighborhood where the houses are all pretty close together, everyone would decorate their homes and get super into it, and literally families drive in from other areas to trick-or-treat there. Literally, my parents would have to buy more than 500 pieces of candy to give out, would only give out 1 per kid, and would still run out before the end of the night. THey used to try to bribe my brother and me for our candy when we came home so they could keep passing it out. anyway, it was SO FUN!

Awesome! When we were really little, my aunt made all of our costumes. I was an angel, a clown (many times.) Then one year I BEGGED my mom to let me get the cheap plastic Jem costume and she did! It bugged me though, that it said "Jem" on it, because why would the real Jem wear a costume with her own name on it. (Sidenote, I'm totally being Jem again this year!)

I loved having Halloween at school, when we'd have a party in class and do a parade. And TOTing was great of course!

I hate that I live in a place now where Halloween doesn't really exist. We've thrown a party every year, but this year I'm not sure many ppl will come since it's on Friday night. Oh well.

Our Halloweens were always super fun but varied year to year. When I was quite little my mom always made really creative costumes... I never had anything store bought. When I got to be older I would make my own costumes. I don't even remember the last time I went with parents, I usually went with a group of friends to one of their neighbourhoods. Lots of houses would do these elaborate haunted houses in their garages and went all out so we would make sure to hit up those houses. I loved Halloween.
I had to miss a lot of years because I ALWAYS seemed to get super sick at the end of October... lying in bed sick when I had a costume and all my friends were out trick or treating KILLED me!
