That feeling like I couldnt possibly handle one more contraction and before I could even finish that thought another one would start. It literally did feel like being torn in two. Although the passing of the placenta was a totally different kind of pain! I felt like the pushing part was a relief because thats all I wanted to do during each contraction.

Definitely transition (7-10cm). I wanted to cry, scream and throw up all at the same time. Being stitched up after wasn't fun either.

Knowing when to go to the hospital. I had back labor and irregular contractions until the very end (and for 2+ days.) I was very frustrated because I didn't think it could be "active" labor until they were more regular (and chose to go home at only 2 cm from L&D on the first day.) I went to the hospital when I couldn't handle the pain anymore, still not sure if I was really in active labor... I was 8 cm.

I had a planned c-section so the worst part was the anticipation and nerves. The spinal was no great fun but honestly I had worked myself up so badly.

The contractions before the epidural, definitely cried! Then pushing, just from being tired after 12 hours of labor. I know many have had it way worse though, parts of my labor werent fun, but I don't think as horrible as I expected.

Not being in control!
Contractions were no picnic, but it was feeling like I was on a runaway train that I had the hardest time with- everything was very fast and I didn't have time to get my head around it. If I knew how things would progress ahead of time, I feel like I would have had a lot less apprehension. My hospital and doctor were fantastic, I couldn't have asked for a better labor and delivery.

The drive to the hospital and having to sit still in the bed in the hospital once I got there so they could do baseline monitoring. I was doing ok with the contractions when I could move around, but when I was stuck in one position I lost my mental edge and started begging for pain relief.

This thread is scary.... Watching a video of a birth is one thing.. A descriptive play by play of your hardest moments is much worse. I'm excited to have my baby in a few months...looking forward to feeling like my body is being tore in two? No thanks.

For me the hardest part was how tired I became. The pain was manageable the whole time, I just let my body do it's thing with endorphins and adrenaline to offset the contraction pain. I was just sooooo flippin tired by the end I kept falling asleep between contractions once I hit transition.

TRUSTING YOUR BODY! This is the number one hardest most vital part of L&D. If you don't trust your body pain is worse and progression slows. =/
Hardest physical aspect? Transition for sure! Everyone hates life through transition & the most common time that moms "trying to go natural" cave. This is when the trusting you body & being reminded of such really comes into play.

I thought of another- that first poop post baby. Not fun even with the stool softeners.
All of it sounds scary, but the baby makes everything totally worth it. I would go through it all a million times over and over for this little guy!

honestly, my L&D was quick and easy! recovery has been worse I think.
the contractions during transition were bad, but I didn't even know I was in transition! they hadn't checked me when I got to triage because earlier in the day my OB said I was a 3, so they assumed I hadn't really progressed. I was already a 6, and by the time they got me upstairs I was a 10. I got the epidural though to give her time to labor down, because I went from 3 to 10 in two hours.
Also - the epidural was a piece of cake. The nurse and my husband each had a hand to keep me still (I was a 10 and +3 station, lol!) and they thought it was hurting because I was squeezing so hard, but it was the contractions. The epidural was heaven. I could move my legs but didn't feel anything in the crotch region and then it wore off and that was that! No lasting effects aside from a FANTASTIC mood. lol.

@lemondrop: omg yes. I am dealing with this now. the stool softeners AREN'T working. I would much rather have started stool softeners before delivery and pooped on the table. Pooping on the table sounds much better than pooping in private now!!
tip - I fold a pad into 1/3s (so the soft side is out) and hold that against me for counter pressure. it helps a little.

Right before I was starting to push, I had contractions one on top of another. I was on Pitocin and had the strongest urge to push... and they told me not to! My midwife was in an emergency c-section and the OR wasn't ready for me! So they turned off the Pitocin and my labor STOPPED! No contractions or anything... they were starting to talk c-section until I convinced them to turn the Pitocin back on and I even begged them to turn it up higher than it was to get things rolling again!
Those pitocin contractions that I had before the epidural and when the epidural was failing were brutal... ooh and the back labor with Baby A! Pushing out two babies (which took 3 hours) was a breeze compared to the Pitocin contractions and back labor!
