Someone brought me an amazing homemade meatloaf topped with bacon, mash potatoes and a big Cesar salad. It lasted like 3 full dinners. However I agree, I got a lot of heavy meals and soooooo many cookies/brownies, that I actually put on weight the first few weeks after coming home, which did a number on my fragile emotions! Now, I would make a huge pot of this this for a mom, along with some good bread. It's light enough, but still filling, and nourishing (I sub the water with homemade chicken broth)
It actually taste better and better by the third/ fourth day.

A rotisserie chicken from Costco, some snacks, and a giant bowl of beautiful cut and washed fruit.

Anything my mom brought. It was all comfort food from my childhood that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside when I needed it most. I'm a really picky eater, so if people had made casseroles I wouldn't have eaten them... (DH would have though!) Aside from that, I appreciated when friends came over and offered to pick up food. It was a nice treat

This is my go-to for new moms: http://damndelicious.net/2012/11/07/lightened-up-greek-yogurt-chicken-salad-sandwich/
My favorite food deliveries were Popsicles (I got hooked on them while in labor after the epidural!), good cheese and crackers, and a neighbor brought an easy to make comforting dinner of pasta, meatballs and sauce, and chocolate chip cookies. So nice to have some comfort food in the house. And anything you could eat with one hand like muffins

No one brought us food in the hospital either time. One friend brought us one casserole after my second. So I guess that is it by default!

My brother, who went to culinary school and works at a fancy restaurant, came over a week postpartum and made me a croque madame (and cleaned up afterwards).

No one brought us home cooked food (it wasn't a done thing b/c we were living overseas where household help is the norm)......but one couple sent us a really nice charcuterie/cheese/antipasti/wine basket. It was so nice because it was easy to pick at, and full of things I'd avoided in pregnancy. It felt like someone was treating me like a grown up again!
