I had a similar reaction, being surprised that I didn't recognize her. I mean I was excited and it wasn't a negative thought but I was surprised at how she looked and then I thought she looks just like my husband, I just gave birth to my mini girl version of my husband, and thought that was funny and a bit weird.

Then I thought, "I want her I want her I want her they aren't going to take her over to clean her up first, I want her I want her I want her" I'm not sure if I actually asked for her or just started reaching for her but they let me hold her before the cord was cut so I got my wish. And then I don't know that I really had thoughts, it was more a zen like feeling while I looked at her.

I couldn't believe that a REAL baby was what was in me that whole time. It was kinda weird (in a good way) but I think I remember saying "Wow... you're what was in me?!"

Guess that goes along with the whole "recognizing" thing... I mean you know your baby is in there, but then DS got here and it was like WHOA! lol

I wish I would've gotten him right away.. I had an "emergency" cesarean so I was glad to just make it back to my room awake (seeing the syringe full of morphine going into my back was crazy) I woke up a few hours later and DS had already been cleaned up and met all of the family. =/

First thought: "Where did you come from? You're really my baby?"
Second thought: "Wow, you have more hair than I thought you would!"
Third thought: "Holy crap, I have a baby."

@Rubies: I was also shocked how much hair my baby had, it was unreal, lol.

I haven't had mine yet, but I know that my first thought upon seeing my 2nd "nephew" (as he was being born) was "Oh my God, it's PURPLE!" Then "TORIN! I love you!" Then seeing that his mom was OK. Then "PURPLE FLYING BABIES! Babies are purple, and they fly. WTF?" I'm still not over the purple flying babies thing, and it's been over 2 years.

"Wow...she's really yellow! She should be tan...like me! Why is she so yellow?"
Then they tried to let her breastfeed and she couldn't. Then they told me her bilirubin numbers were super high and she was being life flighted to Pittsburgh for a blood exchange. They wanted to know why my OBGYN didn't order an RH shot. Everything moved really fast. I gave birth on Friday and didn't get to hold her until Tuesday.

@Artbee-Oh yeah. Apparently I was RH negative (or positive I can't remember now) and I was supposed to get this kind of shot. Well I didn't, and towards the end of the pregnancy, my body started to make antibodies against her. So when she was born, they had to get the bad blood out of her and exchange it. She was in the NICU for almost two weeks.
She's a healthy 5 year old now, but it seems like I was just in the hospital with this look O_O on my face.
I'm grateful to all of the doctors and nurses that caught it instantly.

@Miss Adia: Wow, that sounds like grounds for malpractice! Glad everything turned out ok.

my first thought was... holy crap.. I guess it really was a baby in there!

My first thought was thank God labor is over finally! I didn't even have the energy to cry or anything, I was just happy I wasn't in pain anymore.

i think my first thought was "whew!"

@TEQUIERO21- Yeah I can't believe they didn't catch it.

"She looks like my baby!" and then "Wow, why is she staring at me - I thought newborns don't open their eyes yet."

"Wow, look at her top lip quivering! She looks like a big eskimo!"

She was crying and tightly swaddled.LOL

@ artbee - I lucked out and things went pretty quickly. But yeah, it was definitely tiring and a weird feeling.

They laid Baby T on me right away and I was just in shock. I remember that it just felt right and I was crying and holding him and looking back and forth from DH to Baby T and back again. An exhausted peace came over me. I had been pushing for 3 hours after about 24 hours in labor, but I didn't feel the extent of the exhaustion until that night. I remember thinking that he was so big. He was 10 pounds 9 ounces, which now seems so tiny in comparison to 23 pounds! I was in love immediately. I had to hand him off to the nurses to get stitched up because I was afraid he was going to fall. The pain of getting stitched up was the worst part of it all, and I just remember being so mad that it was taking so long and I wasn't holding my baby. Once he had been laid on my chest I just didn't want to put him down. I remember after the nurse took him from me to go to the warmer and to weigh him asking if he was a boy. We had been told at 20 weeks that he was, but no one had checked once I delivered him.

Our first was supposed to be a girl (confirmed by ultrasound), so my first thought when she came out a boy was..."are those balls!?!!?"

@artbee: Yes! Let's just say his room was centered around a pink shag rug Maybe that's why his favorite color is pink?
