I voted cloth training pants, but they're really these, from One Step Ahead. They have a layer of PUL in the center of two cloth layers, so they dont' get the pants wet, but they still allow the child to feel if they are wet or dry.

We started by letting DS run around naked one weekend. He figured our pee right away. Poop took about 2 weeks. I just put him in regular underwear.

I put her in underwear and that worked right away.

I put him in underwear and he got it after about a day of that. I put pull ups on him at first, when he was starting 3k, but they were futile, cause he would just use it like a diaper. I had to go cold turkey with him.

Bottomless was quick - by the 3rd day she was going pee/poo by herself. We did it at 24 months.

@Andrea: @Dandelion: @sandy: wondering when you decided to take the underwear plunge? What was your LO doing re the potty? My LO is 26 mos and now uses the potty regularly at school and home (but still wets in between) and is asking for undies. I am trying to figure out when to take the next step??

@MamaCate: I just decided to take the plunge because her baby sis was coming and I didn't want 2 kids in diapers. She wasn't showing any signs of potty readiness so I'm surprised that it went so well. Just good luck I guess!

@MamaCate: I just did it...the pull ups weren't getting us anywhere, because he used them as diapers, so I took them away and let him feel himself get wet and it helped a lot.

@MamaCate: When you say she has accidents in between do you mean she wets herself when you are out and about in public like at the store or at the zoo for an outing? When we first started potty-training I would make sure she used the potty before we left the house and if she didn't go we would go find the potty once we got to our destination. Also, if we went to someone's house I would show her where the potty was. When she was 24 months she didn't tell us when she had to go...she would just run towards the door or where the bathroom was and we would follow her to help her. She didn't start telling us she had to go until closer to 26 months. At home she just used the potty herself b/c we had her bottomless at home for a month and a half. In the beginning, outings were a little stressful, but I just made sure to keep an eye on the clock and tried to take her to the potty every hour or two...depending on how much she had to drink. After a month and a half she started telling us when she had to go so I didn't have to stress too much about watching the clock...but I still kind of do b/c she can get distracted when we're in a new environment and I don't want to have to hike halfway across the zoo to find a bathroom...so sometimes I take her as we're passing a restroom.
We started with underwear about a month and half after potty training. We put them on at home and she had a few accidents where she started to pee in them...but after 2-3 accidents she understood she was not supposed to pee in her underwear. I think the younger they are, the accidents are learning experiences. Also, pull ups were not helpful b/c they would make her regress so we never use them during the day. She does wear a pull up to bed and at naptime though and that hasn't caused any problems.
I loved this site and read it over and over again...it was a great resource for me

@sandy: thanks for the reply! Our situation is a little different in that LO is in daycare FT so bottomless extended time is not an option. She currently will ask to use the potty on her own both here and at school, but doesn't stay dry between these attempts. So she will ask to go potty, go, then continue to pee in her diaper until she decides she wants to try again. I guess we need to work on the idea of going all the time on the potty first and not going when not on the potty. Thanks for the link--I will check it out!!

For our son, definitely bottomless time. We did the 3 day boot camp and it started working the second day. My daughter trained herself shortly after turning 1.

i'm following this post!
LO is 20 months and we just got the bumbo potty to go ontop of the toilet. i would totally love to do the bottomless/underwear route, but we live in a small rented apartment (our landlords are our good friends) that is pretty much 95% carpet. so..... not sure what to do about that!
anyone have recommendations?

I votes sposies, my son hates the heavy feeling of full sposies and was cloth diapered, so they actually worked. That and a lot of skittles and now we have stickers. He is pretty much fully potty trained at this point.

We did extended bottomless time on carpet - it cleaned up easily! We did naked time often for a long time, and agreed either pee or tell us she needed a diaper. She just didn't really have the trick of letting go to actually use the potty, though she could hold it well. One day she got that part, and we went with it. Underwear only.
