A coworker was recently diagnosed with cancer and we were talking about ways we could help him out/just let him know we were thinking of him.
We were trying to come up with ideas that went beyond just handing him a card with money. Any ideas of how to show him we care and are thinking of him?

I'm sorry about your co-worker. Maybe a gift certificate to a food delivery or house cleaning service? Or a basket of goodies with some treats and uplifting books?

I had a coworker who is fairly private and had a medical issue (early stage cancer is my assumption) and had to be off work for several weeks. I sent her a card in the mail with a restaurant gift card (they deliver) and said that I hope her and her family could take a night off from cooking and dishes and relax.
Some companies also allow donation of PTO. A meal train might be nice too, depending on the situation.

If he has a family, I would say that doing a meal train or a gift card to a place that delivered would be a good idea. Though when my mom was going through chemo, she didn't want to eat much since it made her feel so sick. So I like the idea of a cleaning service, or even just some stuff to do while he's receiving treatment. Magazines, books, games, munchies...depending on how long his treatment is, it's long and boring sitting there for hours every week.

My aunt is going through chemo right now and besides meals (she really doesn't have much of an appetite so I usually do more snack type things) I get her books, magazines, games, ect. to keep her busy during the treatment. Also a nice warm blanket because she gets cold.

Have a little surprise party for him. Have everyone dress up in the support color of his particular cancer and do an office lunch. It's much more personal than everyone signing a card and would really show him that people made an effort to support him.

A co-worker's MIL is going through this and one thing she's doing is making her high-protein meals while she's going through chemo. She's been trying recipes she found online. Today it's cream of mushroom soup made with almond milk and it looks really good. You could try that.

@kiddosc: Very cute idea!
@avivoca: I would advise against making home made food. Many on chemo will have odd taste buds and have to be careful about food preparation and handling.
@LuLu Mom: Magazines and a good blanket are great ideas. Also a good tote bag to take to chemo appointments that is full of activities and a good neck pillow.
