I have a rpetty small FB list of friends already and 98% of them have views that align pretty closely with me and most of them are pretty PC.
But I've unfriended once or twice in the past when it was a long-ago aquaintance who I'll never see again who posts too often--like a dozen times a day, clogging up my newsfeed. I just realized I don't care about the details of their life, so I deleted.

i hide certain family members who are too annoying for words.

I generally hide people if I don't want to see their posts for one reason or another. I only unfriend people who I either don't like (and shouldn't have friended in the first place), or people who I don't plan on ever seeing again and don't have any real contact with (like old high school/college acquaintances).
Over the last few years I've been realizing that I don't want everyone to know what I'm up to, just the people I actually care about. Some people I do keep because I want to know what they're up to though!

@bluestriped bee: this happened to me recently. I went to write a post to them, and was like..what on earth? I know I complain on facebook sometimes, but I'm definitely none of the above excessive swearer, drama, obnoxious posts, etc. I don't even post a million photos, lol. I was a little hurt at first but then got over it.
that said, I never really delete people. I only add you if I can place you (via HB or IRL), but I mainly hide annoying people. Unless they do something REALLY out there - I deleted a hs acquaintance for constantly posting Boston Marathon bombing government conspiracy theories.

I usually just hide people.
The only person I intentionally deleted was a girl with whom I had recently become close IRL. She even sent a really touching holiday message to me that year not long after we became friends. I'm not sure what happened to our friendship but a few months later she was exceedingly snarky and cold with me on several occasions. I was pregnant at this point (I hadn't yet told her) and highly emotional and decided to give her the boot. I've never regretted it and we haven't spoken since. Well, she did ask me if I deleted her from Facebook about two months after the fact, and I didn't bother responding.

Same. I don't mind what my FB friends beliefs are, but when they start spouting off hate speeches or just generally uneducated "I'm right, you're wrong, get over it" messages when no one asked for their opinion is call for a delete.
I had one girl back during the 2012 election post over and over again about how everyone who was voting for Obama was stupid. She must have gotten a lot of criticism for it because she posted later "I'm voting for Romney and you're stupid if you don't. If you have a problem with that you can delete me right now." So I took her up on it. I seen later she posted that she had lost over 50 friends.
Other than that, just people who are generally annoying.

I don't really unfriend people! I think only one time some guy from high school that posted non-stop really odd/controversial statuses. He was just annoying.
My brothers GF unfriended my mom, me and my sister after we met her. That was a treat.

I don't usually defriend, I just hide a person's posts if he/she gets really annoying. I think it's funny that people defriend over differences of opinion, since in real life I don't feel my friends have to have the same views that I do on everything.

agree with the religious/political stuff... Right now there are a lot of people I just have hidden rather than delete because it would cause too much drama. I learned my lesson after deleting my cousin after he made a joke at my brother's expense. I thought, Who cares about Facebook? Apparently a lot of people...

I unfriend people I added a while back but have not really interacted with. I like to keep my friends' list as small as possible. I wouldn't remove someone because of a difference of opinion or how annoying they are, I'd just hide their posts from my news feed.
