LO is 3.5. I know he'd LOVEEE gymnastics (we visited once and he was freaking out wanting to try; and, he just has the personality). Four 45-min sessions cost $65, which is like, $20 an hour..... that seems a bit steep to me in terms of the hourly cost. Is that a standard, above, or below average amount?

I pay $55 a month for four 45-minute dance classes. I think this is a reasonable amount. Swim lessons are $127 a month for four 20-minute private lessons at a facility (as opposed to private person in private pool). So $65 a month isn't bad. The private lessons are what start to get more pricey.

We live in San Francisco and this is pretty standard here, swimming is even pricier. If you think it is a good place, your kid will like it and you can afford it, I would give it a try - most places here have a free trial class available. If my kids don't seem into something we just drop it and if they like it we continue. With the exception of swimming, my daughter doesn't love the lessons but does love swimming for fun, so she needs to be competent. We'll probably stop the lessons once I feel like she has hit that.

Where we are the going rate is 25-35$ per class. And the classes are only 30-50 minutes, never an hour. Ouch! So for me, yeah I would jump on it!

My son is 4 and his gymnastics class is $84/month and the lessons are 45 minutes. The more affordable option near us is around 70/month but they don’t have as many class options. He’s in a mini “ninja warrior” style class as opposed to traditional gymnastics. I hate to pay that much but he freaking loves it.
He’s also in swimming which is only $45 for 3 months because it’s offered through a local non profit that offers low cost classes to kids. So I guess it balances a bit because I want him to learn how to swim but the cost of lessons really is astronomical.

Is there a decent parks and rec program in your area? That might be an option for a beginning gymnastics class. If not, those seem like reasonable prices for a private place. We recently paid $75 for four thirty minute beginning skating lessons for our five year old, and we pay more than that for weekly (half hour) swim lessons. I do expect to pay more for swim lessons though.

We’re paying $35 + tax for each 30-minute private swim lesson for DD 🤑. We tried group lessons through parks and rec but the groups were so big and she got so little attention, it was pretty much a waste of time. She loves the private lessons and is learning so much, but if I didn’t consider swimming an essential skill as opposed to a hobby, I’d probably balk at the price. OTOH, her dance classes work out to about $20 per 50-minute session, but she’s now flat-out refusing to go and we’re paid through February...so the swim lessons are apparently a better deal. 🤬

We're paying $11.50/hr for gymnastics at the local parks and rec department. You get what you pay for with this program but it works for our needs (4 & 6 yo, not future gymnasts). I would expect prices at a studio to be beyond what I want to pay. We spend most of our class/activity money on pool membership and swim lessons.

Sounds on target to cheap to me! My daughters’ gymnastics class (1 hr/week) costs $25-30 per class - I pay by the session; it’s roughly $250 every 2 months.
I find that casual gymnastics (not competitive or pre-team) is more costly than casual dance or soccer/basketball etc., which costs more like $15-$20 per class. It makes sense to me because I’m sure the gym carries more insurance, has higher rent, and higher start up/maintenance costs than our dance studio.
If you feel the gymnastics is a bit costly for you, you might check into local dance studios that run tumbling classes - it’s often much cheaper, but of course they don’t have all the big gym equipment. Rather than letting my aspiring gymnast take a second weekly class, she’s doing an acro (tumbling) class at her sister’s dance studio because it’s less than half the price ($68 per month for one 50 minute class per week).

$20/class is the starting rate here. I’ve paid $45 for an hour long class before.

My girls both do gymnastics and it’s about $22 per 45 minute class. I saved a bit of money by paying for 6 months at a time. As a working mom it was the only place I could find with hours that worked for our family.

I generally don't pay $20 an hour for my kid to have directed play time, especially since it's not a drop-off class.

My son attends a weekly gymnastics class. The owner of a local gym comes to the daycare and holds a 45 minute class. We pay $40 a month.

@DesertDreams88: I agree with you about the price for something "safety" involved. And also, I wouldn't want to pay more than $20 for just "play". My girl can play at home for free. So the dance class I have her in is actually a really awesome class with an awesome teacher. She is learning patience and also learning to dance! Maybe she will want to be a cute little ballerina growing up. I'm not sure but its great to see her in this class. There is another class with a different teacher, and no way I would pay a penny to put her in with that teacher who doesn't have good skills herself and really isn't too structured. So all in all, I think it just comes down to why you want the class and what you are comfortable paying for it. There are lots of free things at libraries and parks you can probably find, too. ETA: I have heard great things about putting kids in gymnastics class. Like, those skills can easily translate to other skills that will be good to have growing up.

Yeah gymnastics is expensive in our area too. My 3 year old loves it, and we did end up paying for it last year and it was about $85/month - one class a week....
Gets worse when they get older though. UGH. My 6, almost 7- year old LOVES playing hockey. $1700 for the season. Not including all of the expensive gear and travel.

@DesertDreams88: my 3.5 yo’s gymnastics class is about that price- $85 a month but the class is an hour- not a drop off. She’s only in school 2 mornings a week though so I like the extra structured activity and exercise for her. She definitely isn’t just playing, the coach keeps them all focused and she seems to be learning some skills.
Her ballet class is definitely more “fun” but she loooves that one and again, she is in a class, listening to s teacher, following directions. And having a blast.

I think these things add up unfortunately. We’re not enrolling DS in anything right now and he hasn’t asked (yet). Haha! -
Gymnastics with a good coach and facility is expensive. That sounds like a bargain!

We pay $55 a month per kid for dance. If they would have chosen gymnastics, it would have been $65.
