I can only say what we've experienced - no clue if it's normal. LO's gum was red and swollen, and his nose was very runny/super drooly and then we saw a white spot. A few days later we had a ROUGH night and the next day it had cut through. We're going through the same thing right now for tooth #2.

All in all it was probably a week from change in behavior/symptoms to cut tooth. If he was physically pulling on his gum and fussing, I'd give him hyland's teething tablets. I give tylenol if he is crying/screaming when I have attempted offering everything else and/or know it's not hunger or overtiredness.

Like @chopsuey119 our son had virtually no signs of teething other than a very low fever. All of a sudden he had his first two teeth right before his first birthday. He has been very slow to get his teeth and at almost 2.5 years only has 12, but 4 more have just started poking through in the last 3 weeks. We've been very lucky with the symptoms.

On the other hand, DS has a cousin who is just four weeks younger and he had his first teeth at about 6 months. He had all of his teeth by 1.5 years and terrible symptoms every time: fever, diarrhea, lots of drool, night weaklings, irritability, ear infections, everything!

It really just depends on the kid.

Mine wasn't fussy at all while teething... he was just a drooling monster.

Sometimes it was hard for him to go to sleep and we thought it was teething so we gave him meds just before sleeping to help but it turns out he's just chranky when try to put him to sleep.
