Trivial Pursuit 90s edition is fun, and so is Taboo. Thinking about trying Cards Agaisnt Humanity next.
What's the best (i.e. most fun) board game to play when you have friends over? Would your answer change if everyone is drinking?

We aren't drinkers, but for us, slapagories, catchphrase, and apples to apples always win.

We recently started playing Mexican Train Dominoes. So fun for those of us who like strategy games more than creative games!

Cards against humanity is absolutely hilarious...just so long as your friends aren't easily offended!

Apples to Apples, Things, Catchphrase.
If you're drinking...Things can get even more fun.

Cranium or Quelf. If you haven't heard of Quelf you need to get it! Seriously we almost peed ourselves playing it at my sisters!!

@mrs bunchy: I just looked up Quelf... hadn't heard of it!
Haha that's way too extrovert a game for me... I was uncomfortable just watching the commercial!!

haha it's this game that you play with a bunch of people. One person starts and takes a card. Each card has 1-5 and something next to each number, so as you go around the circle the next person reads 2, then 3, etc.
The person with the card reads the sentence they are assigned and there's a blank to fill in a name. Everyone writes their answer and gives them to the reader. Reader chooses the best one and reads it out loud. Everyone else has to guess who wrote it. Winners get points. It can get pretty raunchy - especially when you incorporate drinking (you got it wrong? you drink!) After the guesses the reader reads them all out, it is SO funny.
We did this at a cottage one year and had to burn all the pages we wrote answers on before one guy came up because they were all digs at his dating choices

@mrbee: haha. The first time we played it I think DH was a tad uncomfortable with some cards he drew. But in the end, we were playing with close family and friends... So no judgements there!

@redsmarties: I just looked up things because I apples to apples and catchphrase - it looks fun! Maybe we'll add it to our collection...

@Mrs. Lion: my dad is obsessed with that game. I've only played it once though.
@nana87: have you tried Puerto Rico? It's pretty similar to settlers of catan

@babycanuck: Ah that sounds familiar! Are there other party games that work like that too?

Not a board game, but we just hung out with friends today and had the best time drinking and playing the Heads Up app by Ellen DeGeneres. So fun and only $1!

Cards against Humanity is a lot of fun, although you need to make sure the friends you're playing with are 100% liberal/nothing offends them. Seriously. Everything from "The Holocaust" to "the gays" are included. Friends of friends created it, which I didn't know the first time I played it!
Another one to try (if you're a maximum of 4 people-or just for you and Mrs. Bee) is Forbidden Island (http://www.amazon.com/Gamewright-317-Forbidden-Island/dp/B003D7F4YY). You work on a team which makes it a group competition rather than one person against another. We just played it with friends last night (while drinking!) and it was a blast.

Well my suggestions were going to be Cards Against Humanity and Taboo, so...
Balderdash can be fun, but if everyone's drinking it might not go well. Scattergories?

I still love monopoly. Always and forever.
But cards against humanity has stolen my heart. It's awesome. I'm mega conservative and fairly uptight but am somehow not easily offended and I think the game is awesome. For every nasty and inappropriate card, there is a basic card with "hot pockets" or "Nickleback" on it.

@MrsMcD: What's your favorite Monopoly piece? I like the shoe or the top hat...

Our family favorite is Settlers, Mexican train dominoes, iron dragon, apples to apples, cranium, betrayal at house on the hill, pirates cove. I am having trouble thinking of others but my dad has over 1,000 games at his house so we play tons.

I definitely recommend cards against humanity. For the none drinking crowd, we have had a lot of fun with wits and wagers. The game of things can get crazy.
