So the playroom has a door and she could pretty much treat it as her own guest room for the week? I'd be inclined to do that because I don't have a great sleeper. I'm always afraid of messing with her sleep and everyone suffers when she doesn't sleep well.

We have dh's grandmother coming for one night and we have a two bedroom. She is going to sleep in our bed, DH and I are going to sleep in the queen bed in LO's room (she is still in the crib). But that's only for one night.

As long as your SIL is young and healthy (doesn't have any back issues, etc) I would put her in the playroom on an air mattress rather than mess up LO's sleep routine.

@Charm54: eh. I feel like if you are staying for free at someone's house, an air mattress is fine. Like @Truth Bombs: said, as long as she is young and healthy.

As a guest I'd rather everyone be sleeping well, and knowing I messed up a toddler's sleep would be way worse than an air mattress to me.

I wouldn't put a guest on an air mattress unkess absolutely necessary. Give her the kid's room! I sound like an emphatic wet blanket but who wants to spend a week on an air mattress in adulthood?

I'd put sister-in-law on the air mattress in the playroom. She has her own private room still and you aren't risking messing with DD1's sleep.

She is choosing to not pay for a hotel when I'm sure she knows you only have one guest room and two young children. I think when you put yourself in that situation you have to except whatever the hosts offer for sleeping arrangements.

I might be in the minority but I would give her the bed. She is still a guest and who wants to sleep in a room full of toys? And again, it might be just me but I wouldn't want a close family member to pay for a hotel during thanksgiving no less when you have rooms available. I don't think your LO will regress since she prob will be tired with all the guests and yummy food.

My Inlaws were here for a month from another country over the summer. My mother in law injured her foot so she couldn't go up and down stairs. We did the best we could and gave them the playroom (only room downstairs) but did drag the queen bed in there. We also put all the toys and stuff away the best we could. LO was 2 and would barge in their room early morning thinking it's still her playroom

could you try one night with her in the nursery and if is a disaster switch it up for the next 6 days? I would do the air mattress instead of the crib.

@Charm54: yeah, we have a 4 bedroom as well and when my family comes to visit it's 4 adults and 4 kids! There's definitely some sleeping arrangement jenga happening! If they come for Christmas we actually might buy another twin. My poor brother that does 80% of the driving, usually ends up getting the aerobed!
My older brother, SIL, and 3.5 year nephew get the guest room. SIL and nephew sleep on the Queen. Brother sleeps on the twin, he has health issues and needs to get good rest. My mom gets DD1's twin. My other brother sleeps on an aerobed in the nursery. Baby comes into our room in the PnP and our 3.5 year old sleeps in bed with us. Three older kids camp out in the family room. Usually one takes the couch and the other two on an air mattress. It's tight but I love having everyone in the house. And I'm Chinese, so it's ingrained in me that houseguests, especially family stay at your home. I would never ask my immediate family to stay at a hotel when we can make room for everyone!

I guess it's somewhat normal to me to displace the children for guests, since when we visit SIL, we sleep in my niece's room (niece sleeps with her parents while we are there), and when we visit my sister, we sleep in my nephew's room (he sleeps in the living room).

At some point, your SIL may have kiddos of her own and the tables may be turned, haha.

I would arrange something for your SIL and not change the LOs' sleeping arrangements. Afterall, adults are more adaptable than kids. I wouldn't want to rock the boat and risk bad sleep!

Is it an option to put SIL on the airbed in the nursery? Or to try to the camp together option for your older LO and SIL?

I'm' in the camp of accommodating parents but not much else. My parents get the guest room. If anyone else is here at the same time, they either get a hotel or they make due with whatever I provide them. I'm not trying to run a hotel or be hostess of the year. Fortunately, I don't have multiple guests at the same time typically.
