Venue. We didn't figure out the date, guest list or budget until we knew where we wanted to get married.

we had an estimated budget in our heads, we paid for 50%, each of our parents helped with 25%
we booked our venue a couple months after engagement. i wanted the first few months to just enjoy being engaged and living in our new home

Location. We wanted to get married during the summer and given that was only 5 months away at the time, and it's during the peak wedding season, that was the first order of business.

I may have bought my dress before we were officially engaged, but DH was cool with it. Other than that, venue.

Before we were even engaged we decided on the area and time of year we wanted to get married (we live one place, our families are in two other places). After that we got a general budget, then rough guest list, but the first thing that was set in stone was the venue/date, roughly at the same time as finalizing the church date.

@mrsjyw: I should have done that...instead we looked at venues the weekend after we got engaged! I was in such a tizzy because I'd heard so many horror stories about NYC venues getting booked like 2 years in advance!

Theme/colors. Budget was a close second, but I already had the colors in mind and just had to get DH's okay.

Photographer! We both knew we wanted one of our good friends to do it because she is crazy talented. We based our date around her!

Location and date. There were lots of things included with our venue so it was important that we have that set up.

Approx head count so we could consider venues that would accommodate everyone.

We got our venue locked down first--the last date they had available for the year--thus, our date was picked second! After that it was photographer and DJ/band.

I think the date came first. It was most important for us because it ended up being the difference between a 3 month engagement and a 15 month engagement, and that made a difference for every following decision.

venue - we got their 2nd to last date for the year - and then our pastor.

Venue! That then determined the date and budget. It was a B&B I had bookmarked looooong before getting engaged. We visited it in person and fell in love, the rest of the wedding really fell in place from there.

my shoes. because of the nature of our wedding (religious ceremony) there is only 1 place in nz we could have had it, so I don't count that as a decision, it was a given!
I *knew* I was going to wear flip flops as my shoes. lets just say no one was surprised

DRESSWe couldn't nail down the venue without a date, and we couldn't choose a venue until we knew our budget.
I ended up getting the date and venue I have always wanted.
After we chose venue, I had a clear idea of the formality level/ theme of the wedding, so I went ahead and bought my dress. -
we did things backwards haha the venue and date came first! thankfully we got the venue we absolutely wanted and then decided on budget....

Our guestlist.. because it was so huge, we needed to know the exact number in order to know which venues were large enough (this was all because of DH's side - not my plan to have a large wedding but loved every second of it)
