@simplyfelicity: I'm surprised her doctors let her go that long! That's crazy! I thought my SIL was bad at over 4 hours!

holy crap. You'd think things would get too swollen for the baby to ever come out. I have a friend who pushed for about 4. I pushed for 2.5

Wow, I can't believe they let her push that long! I pushed for 3 hours. At the 2.5 hour mark the dr on call gave me three options if I couldn't get the baby out myself, vacuum, forceps or c-section. I ended up with a forceps delivery.
Just after 3 hours I was so swollen I had to keep te catheter in for another 30 hours because I couldn't pee on my own!

I pushed for just over 4.5 hrs and at the 4 hour mark I was BEGGING for a c-section. My dr said you wanted a vaginal delivery I know you can do it! Twin A was finally born with a vacuum extraction and twin B ended up being a c-section anyway! Ha!

@simplyfelicity: Right, but usually the baby is in distress at that point, or it's not safe anymore for the mom! I pushed for 2 hours and they took me in for a C-section because I developed a fever. Had the fever not developed, they would have given me the same options as @KT326: vacuum, forceps, or C-section.

My friend pushed around 4 hours, which an epidural that kept stopping working. She ended up with an episiotomy and vacuum assisted delivery.

@simplyfelicity: maybe part of it wasn't actively pushing? Could she have done some practice pushes and then labored down for a bit? That's what I actually did before I started actively pushing. I only count the active pushing!

@gingerbebe: Wow. That's twice as long as I pushed and I thought mine was bad!

I pushed for 4 hours, and my doctor would have allowed me to go longer, as I wasn't tired or developing any issues. Unfortunately, baby was getting tired and his heart rate wasn't coming back up quick enough after the pushes. So she decided to go with a vacuum-assist. A c-section was never discussed. I was quite swollen, and it took over 10 hours before I could pee onmy own, but I wouldn't change anything.

My friend pushed for 4 hours and then a new doc came in and said "there's no way this baby is coming out!!!" And she had a c section.

9 hrs? My 2 hrs was already way past my limit. I have no idea how I even pushed for that long!

I pushed for over 3 hours. A coworker of mine pushed for 4.

@TrailRunner: Maybe you should start a shortest time thread and that could help unscare you?

@simplyfelicity: She probably got things mixed up.
After my long long labor I had no concept of how long any part of it took. I couldn't even tell you if I went to the hospital during the day or night. I thought I was in triage for while but I was shocked when DH told me it was 4-5 hours. Maybe it felt like 9 hours to her.

@simplyfelicity: that is so dangerous! I knew of an acquaintance who pushed for that long and the baby's head was pretty damaged. I pushed for a little over 3 hours - at the 3 hour mark they said they don't recommend pushing any longer and I had an episiotomy &forceps.

Yikes!!! I pushed for 3 hrs at which point they told me they would try the vacuum and if that didn't work I would need a c section. Luckily she came out the first contraction with the vaccum!

I pushed for just over two hours and I had no clue it was that long. It felt like maybe 45 min! But I was in labor for 36 hours (26 unmedicated) so I really had zero concept of time by the time I was pushing.

My cousin pushed for almost 5 hours which I cannot even imagine. My first baby is due on Halloween and I am terrified of them using forceps on me!

@Corduroy: Agree that it's hard to remember how long things took in labor. My whole labor was crazy fast but afterward I thought that pushing was like 5-10 min, but DH told me it was probably close to 1/2 hour.

I pushed for 4.5 hours. ended up with vacuum delivery, but it was an easy vacuum.
honeydew / 7504 posts
3 hours. The doctor had to use the vacuum to help pull him down, but then I was able to push him out. I'd had an epidural earlier in the day, but it fell out and never took when they replaced it. I cannot imagine that she actually pushed for 9 hours solid. I don't think a human body could withstand that, let alone that the baby could tolerate that. After 3 hours, D was not breathing when he was delivered.

I have absolutely zero concept of time from both of my labors.
A little over 3 hours pushing with my first. I should have asked to labor down longer and his head was huge. I never got pushing down with my first, but he came out anyway. My second I pushed for less than 30 minutes, and pushing was much easier for me that time. He had his hand by his head, so I had a vacuum assist, which was no big deal at all, he popped right out with very minimal tearing.

2 hours for mine, they started prepping the room for delivery and kicked my mom out about 9pm, by 9:30 I was doing practice pushes and she was born at 11:23pm. It didnt feel that long but my mom said it felt like an eternity in the waiting room

That sounds awful!
I pushed for 2 hours when my epidural failed. I had a 2ish hour break until my epi was fixed- it had been 41 hours. They had me keep pushing and T was born 2 hours later- so 4 hours total. I had a fever and had an unplanned induction due to pre e. A c section was on the table when dilation stalled. People have expressed surprise they let me go that long. I thought 4 hours pushing was rather average.

my GF pushed for 3.5 hours, although the last 30 minutes was a last ditch effort before a c-section, so she wasn't fully into it. she and her son were tolerating it totally fine and they were okay with her pushing longer if she wanted it (she was med free until 10-15 minutes before the c-section!) but he hadn't descended at all in that time and she had been up for over 36 hours at that point.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
@simplyfelicity: Her baby was sunny side up and after a while they wanted her to have a C section but she told them she was sure she could do it and after many more hours she did!
apricot / 451 posts
Holy cow some people pushed for forever!!! I always believed that the cutoff was 3 hours, then you have to have a c-section!
pomegranate / 3212 posts
With DS1 I pushed for 3 hours and no one mentioned having to go to another measure i.e. vacuum or forceps.
papaya / 10560 posts
2 hours? I know I pushed for 2, my cervix nearly ruptured, ended up with a vacuum assist as opposed to emergency C and an episiotomy.

@youboots: @sapphire: our hospital (where my previously mentioned GF and I both delivered) said average for FTMs was 1-3 hours. when they told us that (i was at her labor), we were like, no way she's gonna push for 3 hours!! ... and 3 hours later, there we were, totally shocked her son hadn't arrived yet!
