@sapphire: @birdofafeather: glad I did not know that before labor. I do know my girl was not ready to come out yet.

Actively pushing? Me - I pushed for 3 hours before he finally came out. Epidural failed by that point, ugh.
My best friend pushed for 10 hours and was in labor for 2 days, but it was a slooow progression and not actively pushing the entire time. I remember her telling me her midwives let her sleep during the middle of rounds of active pushing, and loaded her up with vitamins between rounds to give her energy.

@simplyfelicity: I'm confused how you could take a break from pushing. I only have experience from my own delivery but once I had the urge to push, I literally couldn't stop. Even if I tried. I had no mess, is it different if you have an epidural?
Like others said I have very little concept of time during delivery. I didn't push for very long- I was totally surprised when they said she could be out on the next few pushes. But I don't know how long. Maybe half an hour?

@Foodnerd81: it's interesting how different each experience is. I pushed for an hour, took a break to labor down (he still hadn't dropped) and then pushed for two more hours. I honestly never had the urge to push the whole time.

@simplyfelicity: so weird. Yeah, there was no mistaking it at all for me! I wonder how the second time around will compare.

@Foodnerd81: Same here! I hope it's a lot faster and the recovery is easier.

@simplyfelicity: I pushed for two hours w ds1 after a failed epidural and ended up w an episiotomy. Didn't feel that long though. Ds2 came out in 3 sets of 3 pushes under 10 minutes Medfree and less than two hours after I was checked in!

I was told that I was actively pushing for just over 6 hours. I honestly have no recollection of time and was passing out between contractions towards the end. I found out later when my nurse came in, looked at my chart, and said 'oh wow, you're the one that pushed for over 6 hours, how are you feeling?'. Apparently my midwife didn't feel it was necessary to intervene so she just let me keep going.

I pushed for 5 hours. That is the longest j have heard of. I still can't believe I did it for that long!!!!
I had to let my epidural wear off so I could feel better, they also had to give me pitocin mid-pushing since my contractions spaced out too far. But, I eventually got him out without any other intervention. I was lucky.

@simplyfelicity: that's long! I pushed for
5 hours and ended with emergency c section. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced as lo was stuck. I was begging for the csection by that time and in surgery they literally had to un-cork his head out of my pelvis by pushing him out via the outside. He was literally stuck.

@simplyfelicity: I never got the strong urge to push with my second. Never felt that "gotta poop" feeling. Not even when I was pushing him out (which only took about 4 pushes the second time!)

@blackbird: but you had the urge to push with your first? I never realized that a lot of people don't- I thought it was a rare thing but I guess not.

@Foodnerd81: Yes! It was a terribly uncomfortable thing with E. I distinctly felt like I had a bowling ball sitting in my vagina. I didn't even know I had dilated to a 10 with T!!! I kept waiting for the feeling and was utterly shocked when they told me it was time to push and then he slid out just a few easy pushes later!

Wow I am amazed so many of you pushed for so long, I had no idea I was so lucky with my 30 mins of pushing!
@Foodnerd81: I was exactly the same, there would have been no question of taking a break! Even when the midwife was saying 'don't start pushing yet as there's still a tiny bit of cervix' I was all like 'yeah ok' but secretly pushing anyway! It was like someone telling me not to breathe!
