It's that time of the year for us to pick trees to plant in the yard (where we live, it's much cheaper to order online so we plan ahead).
DH's thinking about getting an ash tree (Rowan) to attract birds and I want something flowering, preferably with seasonal interest. I wanted a flowering dogwood (wedding cake tree) but got sticker shock, so I'm looking for suggestions 
What are your garden faves? I'm interested in both trees and shrubs.

Was just coming here to say dogwood! I think they're so beautiful but wouldn't work in our yard, boo. We got a pretty tree for our front bed but I don't know what it is called-- we just went to the nursery and spoke to a worker and told them the conditions we were working with and asked for recs. I'd maybe do that to see what would even work with your level of sunlight/rain/propensity to trim/etc?

@Mae: One of the reasons why I don't want to get the dogwood is I'm afraid to kill it! I know it can grow here though, but I'm just not sure if it's worth the price. I found a pretty little shrub (flowering almond) that's so pretty and 10x cheaper!
We've spoken to a few different garden centers and it seems our area has a large selection. So it's a little overwhelming.

I really like the color of Chinese Maples, we will probably put one in our yard in the next year or so.
It's hard for us because we don't want to attract birds and my son is asthmatic as it is.

My favorite flowering shrub is the hydrangea. Insanely easy to grow in the right areas.
We also bought another shrub that I love last year but I can't remember the name....let me think.

A crab apple? Apples for the birds, beautiful blossom and you can make jelly with th fruit. My favourite are butterball (yellow fruit) and royalty which I have (red fruit, crimson flowers and purple leaves turn fiery red in autumn)

I love hydrangea trees!!! Not the bushes....the actual trees! I also love Daphnes for shrubs. It's relatively small but I love the little flowers it has when it blooms.

A other vote for hydrangeas! Lilac bushes are beautiful too.
I grew up with a crabapple tree in our front yard and they are beautiful! They make awesome climbing trees too.

@Greentea: I love magnolias! We inherited a tiny, sickly one when we moved in and it's not doing so good. The tree I'm looking for will be placed in it's spot (to replace it). But maybe I shouldn't give up! I'll look into different varieties.
@Snowdrop: @loveisstrange: We have a crabapple tree in the backyard, although I'm not exactly sure what variety it is since it came with the house. It has magenta colored flowers and red fruit. We also inherited a few lilacs, I love those too!
@Rainbow Sprinkles: Hydrangeas are another favorite of mine, but I can't seem to grow them! A couple of our neighbors have planted the small tree variety, but theirs aren't doing that great either. I think they grow extraordinarily slow here.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I looked up Daphnes and they're really pretty! I found a variety that's native here, got all excited until I read that the berries are poisonous 
It'll be too much work to keep LO away since we have edible berries near.
@Greentea: Back after doing a little search and I think I've fallen in love with magnolia Sayonara, Manchu Fan, and Jon Jon. It can 'technically' survive here, and I found pictures of mature trees throughout the country, but I think I have to baby them since I live in a more unpredictable climate. Argh.

@looch: I don't know much about maples except for the ones that grow like weeds here. I really like some of the Japanese varieties, but those are a problem since they're even more expensive than the Wedding Cake tree that I want.
Interestingly enough, the reason why I'm now so into new trees is because of a maple. The neighbor had a beautiful, mature blood maple that bordered our backyard. My favorite view outside our computer nook window. They moved out and the first thing the new neighbors did was chop it down! What really gets to me is they claimed to 'hate trees' but planted a new tree and ended up keeping the treehouse inside the maple, so the thing is sprouting new little branches still. It's alive, but just a huge trunk.

Woohoo! I think I found my tree It's ornamental with lots of pretty pink flowers in the spring and the leaves change colors during the autumn. It's upright and airy, perfect for the front yard so it won't completely block out the sun. The bark has a reddish tint to it, it grows fast, very tolerant of any kind of soil and does well in cold climates. I don't have to baby it and don't have to cover it during extra cold nights. The best part is -- since it's fast growing, even the largest potted size they have is affordable!
