I think "H Mart" is a chain Korean supermarket, right?
What's your favorite item from H Mart?

Pre-marinated bulgogi or kalbi meat. I keep an emergency stash in my freezer and will be using some tonight actually . My kids also like the bakery items from the Tous Les Jours shop.

Same as T-mom: all the pre-marinated stuff and already made panchan.

I think they have a great produce selection and it's fairly inexpensive. I also like trying new things from the bakery.

@T-Mom: I like to add a little extra marinade and some scallions because I don't know about your Hmart, but mine always skimps on the marinade!
Also the ready-made kimbap when they have it!

@spaniellove: Ooh yes the kimbap, me too. That's a great tip on the marinade. The amount I get kind of varies from time to time...

I wish there was one near me! Next time I go home to NYC I'm going to one.

I'm with T-mom on the pre-marinated meats! So convenient!
@spaniellove: When they're packing the boxes, we always ask for extra marinade. Our H-mart has the already packaged marinated meat and a lil stand where you tell them how many pounds of what you want and they'll pack it for you then. We always purchase from the lil stand. It's right next to the pre-packaged cooler in the meat department.

@Alivoo01: that's so funny.. I always try to say as little as possible to the ladies who work that stand.. I just say how many pounds and what kind because they are grumpy!! Maybe I'll get DH to ask for extra marinade next time. And it doesn't help that I don't speak Korean . I feel like it makes them extra mad at me..

Oh good post! There is one near me and I haven't been in yet. I am feeling intimidated for some reason! My hubs and I love all types of Asian food and I would love to start cooking on my own, rather then relying on takeout all the time.
Not to threadjack but if anyone had a list of basics (including brands) that I should stock up on that would be super helpful

@rsp213: ditto! There's an H Mart down the street from my work, and I'd love to go, but as a non-Asian, I think I'd be lost, haha.

@T-Mom: I don't speak Korean either, but they seem to understand just fine. They never seem happy though. LOL!! I just tell them how many pounds, then before they close the lid, extra marinade.
I don't know what the lady punched in the scale last time we went, but we got 4lbs of Kalbi and the printed sticker price was $60. What the.... So that was fun to get corrected. LOL!

It took me a long time to find gluten-free dwenjang (soybean paste) and kochujang (hot pepper/chili paste), so I thought I'd post a photo. It's not just any sauce in a glass jar! If you live in the Northeast your store might carry these?

The one in ma has a food court. I always get kalguksu or sujaebi when I go. There's also a bakery and I get castella to go. Yum!

I love Hmart but their fruit and produce is so unusually large and declicious I have a hard time believing it's all natural. Prob not....but have you seen their Fuji apples?!
honeydew / 7916 posts
@SupernovaJ: Um, completely unnatural. But I think the packaged fruit (in packs/boxes) is chosen to look a certain way because you're supposed to give only the biggest and most appealing fruit.
@mrsmate: What is castella? I remember hearing about it as a kid but never knew what it was except that maybe it was cream-filled.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
@SupernovaJ: Oh no - I never thought of that! But I've never bought apples there b/c they're too big for me to finish in one sitting anyway.
persimmon / 1081 posts
@spaniellove: castella is a light, fluffy version of pound cake. I think you may be thinking of a roll cake? A spongy log-shaped cake with cream and/or fruit filling. Those are good, too!

the huge box of shin ramen - staple in my house because it's my very italian DH's favorite snack lol!

Does anyone know, do they carry training chopsticks or kid sized ones at Hmart?
honeydew / 7488 posts
@locavore_mama: I'm pretty sure I got our pair of training chopsticks at h mart!

@T-Mom: yay! Cool! Not happy with the selections on Amazon so I will look when I'm at one next month.

There is an H mart near me...I'm not Korean but I love Korean food, I need to go checkit out! Also, off topic but we were looking at houses with our real estate agent the other day and this one house had a kimchi refridgerator...whaaat? So crazy! Our agent (who is Korean) was telling us that it keeps the kimchi at the perfect temperature, etc etc....wow! I was impressed!
