Lmao!!
We do white elephant every year with the family, but the gifts are supposed to be $20 lol so that wouldn't fly! XD
I usually go to Costco and pick something.

@pui: We have a $50 limit - I think I would add a gift card or something in there. We all have kids so I thought giving the battery would be appropriate

@BabyBoecksMom: What if you do a big thing of batteries and then under it you have a gift card? Lottery tickets

The rule for DH's family is the gift has to be homemade. I'm making a tablet holder this year.

Booze. Always booze. We have a white elephant at our company party every year. $20 limit.

I do alcohol or a movie snack basket. Last year the Dollar Tree had plastic movie popcorn containers and movie counter style boxes candy. Add a DVD (Elf is a good choice), bags of microwave popcorn and you are done!

Does it have to be funny? I like giving things people would get more use out of, but they aren't usually funny.
I usually do something like a gift set with nice soaps/lotion/candle.

our pollyanna at work is all women so i bought an alex and ani bracelet

I go to a thrift store and find the weirdest, tackiest thing I can find. You can't bring booze on company property otherwise that's always good!

I've never done a white elephant, but @Leialou: that is so cute and so us. I might actually go home and make that since we have left over copper and joints from a hot water pipe repair we just did!

I just bought one of these for my office white elephant:

And we bought a NJ-shaped cutting board for our family's white elephant. We still need a second gift for that.

@LBee: Are you talking about the breakfast sandwich maker, or the NJ-shaped cutting board?

Alcohol, lottery tickets, or Maglites. People will fight over some flashlights.

@BananaPancakes: I always want to have the gift that people fight over. Last time everyone avoided my gift...

@BabyBoecksMom: That's the worst feeling! Though it's funny when someone brings back the crappy gift from the year before because it's so crappy.

@BananaPancakes: I used to coach gymnastics and one of my kids grandma's gave me a belly dancing kit for a gift. It was a seriously WTF moment. So I brought it to the gym's white elephant.... it was brought every year thereafter for as long as I was there. It was a strange joy to see who got stuck with it that year. I wonder if it's still making its way around

@Ms.Badger: Ha ha. Awesome. Our family has one of those giant cupcake cake pans that is still making the rounds. And I know for a fact that it has left our family and joined another family via marriage. No one has yet to open it.

@Leialou: ooh good gift, that copper holder is so pretty!
@ElbieKay: I saw that on TV the other night. AS seen on TV are good ones for White Elephant.

Starbucks gift cards are always the popular gift at my work's white elephant exchange.

Gift cards are something I always fight for. I'm more into getting things that are useful than something "funny" and it having no use.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Ms.Badger: my sorority used to do that and every year, there was a collection of play girl that made the white elephant game as tradition. The older they were, the better!!

@BabyBoecksMom: I like to do useful household items, usually a flashlight set. Other ideas I would use are: bucket of car wash supplies, home tool set, etc.
I like to get stuff that everyone needs, and if they already have it, chances are they could use another set or retire their old set.

@LBee: Well it does seem like a perfect appliance! My office is full of single 20-somethings so I thought this would be a hit. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

It depends on the group. My coworkers
Christmas party it supposed to be something stupid you don't want around the house. But someone bought a fish +stuff for a little tank and that was pretty funny last year. My friends one we do around 20 and everyone is always trying to find the coolest thing that everyone wants. And my family one is usually 10 dollars and everyone usually buys food/ candy or gift cards.

@ElbieKay: haha! My mom wants that sandwich maker for christmas! I got her a black one
At our work party last year the gifts were
-Flashlights
-Alcohol x3
-Huge box of beef jerky
-Gander Mtn. GC
-A nerf gun lol
some more stuff I can't remember
I have to get 3 gifts around the $25 range for similar parties so thanks for all the ideas!

DH's family always does crap gifts.
One year we gave a ceramic goose. We've gotten bottles of lube (put in by DH's GRANDMA), a 6 ft wooden rosary, etc.

This year I'm taking canned pickles and blackberry preserves that my MIL canned. Last year I did a bottle of two buck chuck and a candle that someone had given me years ago.

@Mrs.Pinecone316: I really kind of like the idea of a fish....wrapping it would be interesting!

Lotto scratchers!!! Our fam does a yearly white elephant gift (we're allowed to steal another present 2x before the gift is off limits) and my scratchers idea was a HUGE hit. Good luck!
