Our Christmas dinner from hereon out is going to be a dry aged Prime Rib. We dry age our own PR.
I think Xmas Eve we'll leave open for fun!
What's your usual holiday dinner entrée?

Depends on what my SIL feels like. Last year it was dry-aged prime rib, and for Christmas Eve it was a pork tenderloin.
This year it looks like it'll be a fancy buffet...

@lovehoneybee: does she always host? You should offer to host one year! Or at least one of it.

@locavore_mama: Yep, they always host. They have a great house for entertaining. I usually help with the meal and do desserts.

Christmas Eve is Pumpkin Soup and Shrimp Pizza. Soo yummy!
Christmas Day is always turkey.

We always have kielbasa from a great little Croatian butcher when we go to my parents' for Christmas. It's usually Christmas eve, and we are at my grandma's for Christmas Day. That's usually ham. My MIL doesn't have a traditional meal, really, but it's often ham. I don't know what we'll do.
Does anyone here do the Seven Fish Dinner for Christmas Eve? I had a few friends in HS whose families always did it. Sounds so, so yummy!

Thanksgiving is my mom's meal of the year we have about 20 for dinner and she goes all out.... Antipasta (meats, cheeses, marinated veggies, pickled veggies and canned fishes), Escarole Soup (italian wedding soup) Pasta course (usually ravioli with meatballs, sausage, etc) and then the Turkey with all the sides
Christmas Eve is the 7 fishes and is my Aunt's Meal, we have about 30-40 people. She does heavy apps - Crab wonton, fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail, Crab dip, raw clams, other dips and cheese spreads. For dinner - Calamari salad, Crabs and spaghetti, crab imperial, lemon flounder, baccala cakes, fried smelts, fried scallops, a huge salad all served buffet style. Its amazing

@LovelyPlum: Seven Fish Dinner? Sounds intriguing!
But you just bought an idea in mind that maybe it would be fun to make Xmas Eve reflect my side. What we would make on a holiday!

Christmas Eve is the Feast of the Seven Fishes (Italian, Catholic tradition); I look forward to this every year!
Christmas Day is maple ham, lasagna, string beans with garlic and almonds, roasted red potatoes and candy cane ice cream for dessert!

@Chillybear: @deerylou: that sounds so good! We're not Italian, but I've always wanted to try doing it!
@locavore_mama: you should! That would be great! And here is the Seven Fish Dinner: http://www.ibtimes.com/christmas-eves-feast-seven-fishes-how-did-it-start-why-966640. No fasting anymore, but lots and lots of Italian families still do it!

@deerylou: What does your family serve? ours is less about having 7 and more like a seafood feast a la red lobster - if it came from the ocean its fair game

We do Beef Tenderlion for Christmas. And ALWAYS make a spanikopita from scratch to go with it. Christmas is when I most love being Greek : )

@Chillybear: Oh, our family is the same way. If it swims/floats, it's totally fair game.
Like your family, we do several heavy appetizers - crab cakes, calamari, ray oysters on the half shell (my father's main obsession), smoked salmon crostini, shrimp cocktail, etc. We will usually have a main, pasta dish that incorporates seafood, as well. We tend to alternate between shrimp scampi, lobster and fettuccine in an herb cream sauce, or linguini with clams, and mussels.

We're Jewish so it's different for Hanukkah we always have latkes at least one night, and we always go out for Chinese on Xmas!

@Chillybear: @deerylou: Ooh, that sounds so good!
On Christmas Eve we always have my mom's lasagna, my grandmother's yeast rolls, veggie trays, and a lot of finger foods while we're hanging out.
Christmas Day is always crab legs, crab melts, my grandmother's yeast rolls, and whatever sides my sister and I request

Christmas- ham; sometimes pot roast or cornish hens too
Thanksgiving- turkey and ham

It depends on where we are for Christmas. Last year at my in-laws it was meat. Straight up meat and no sides. And wine. I was kind of disgusted by the amount of meat.
At my mom's house it would probably be duck. If it were my house, maybe we would do Beef Wellington?

Christmas Eve - the whole family is together and we do appetizer dinner. I love it
Christmas Day - my immediate family does steak and baked potatoes. I hate that we aren't there anymore. IL's do something different each year.
DH and I are 99% we are going to stay home just us three on Christmas Day verses driving to see his family. I hate being in the car on Christmas Day. We are going to do steaks if we do stay home.

@LovelyPlum: my dads side does on Xmas eve! My moms side always celebrated Xmas eve so we did Xmas day with my dads side.
My parents usually host because their house is the biggest and can accommodate everyone. I think there's close to 35 of us, now, since were all married/dating/have kids.
My nana (dads mom) helps cook & everyone brings something. For thanksgiving we have turkey, chicken, pasta, and all the traditional foods like stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.
For Christmas we have a stuffed chicken, chicken parm, rigatoni, polenta, risotto, mashed potatoes, broccoli bake, salads, spinach balls, etc. everything is home made & we all take turns cooking the risotto, which takes all day. We make 4lbs risotto. It's a lot!

When we cook, or with DH's family, its ham and turkey. I LOVE holiday turkey - my favourite thing ever! With my parents, we go out for Christmas dinner, so there are usually choices.

@MamaMoose: ooh, I bet Greek Christmas is delish!
@nana87: LOL. I do love me some latkes And I would totally do Chinese too. Good plan
@Mrs. Jump Rope: yum, yum, yum. The only bad thing about 7 Fish Dinner is the line in the fish market on the morning of...
@deerylou: seriously. I am going to have to try this. Last year, we did mussels and appetizers, and it was pretty much the best thing ever. Even if we don't do all 7 Fishes, I think seafood and apps on Christmas eve is a great idea.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
Hmm...there's usually turkey on Christmas, but a small one supplemented with salmon or a beef tenderloin or something. I don't eat ham and can't even stand the smell so I never cook it if I'm hosting a holiday meal, but my grandma makes it for Easter and sometimes for Christmas. I guess it really just depends who is hosting, the only hard and fast rule is turkey on Thanksgiving!
persimmon / 1379 posts
I am actually surprised...I kinda thought most people did turkey for Xmas!
I guess I come from a boring family...turkey for Xmas and (Canadian) Thanksgiving!

Christmas Eve: lunch is fried chicken (homegrown) at in laws & dinner is always Oster Stew at my parent's house (with Chili and Chicken Noodle as options too.) I always bring chilled shrimp as a side...it is tradition.
Christmas: is always Turkey at grandma's and I bring green bean casserole.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I don't care for turkey, so I don't make it. Even on thanksgiving.
I prefer savory ham, beef tenderloin, salmon, etc.
I also grew up with the fish feast on Christmas eve, but we have scaled it way back. We do apps, pasta with clam sauce and then steamed king crab legs.
eggplant / 11824 posts
I am LOVING these descriptions of the 7 Fishes feast - - might have to do that this year for Xmas Eve!
Thanksgiving is traditional southern Thanksgiving (everything homemade: turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, etc. etc.)
Christmas for the past few years has been Beef Wellington with wild mushroom duxelles, asparagus and hollandaise sauce, roasted potatoes.
We host Christmas Eve dinner and serve several courses....last year we served a wild mushroom soup.....something else I can't remember....another course I can't remember.....and dark rum raisin pana cotta.

We try to do something different each year It is never a big celebration, since we don't have family nearby, which means we can do something a bit fancier. No idea what we will do this year!! My mom did decide that we're actually making thanksgiving this year though! Last year it was burgers and beers in a bar
