We also have a birthday party like this next month...the invitation says no gifts, but we will probably bring books or a gift certificate to barnes&Nobles or something.

I would bring a card, to be opened later, stuffed with Jeffrey dollars or GC to book store or another place.

I always bring a card and depending on the party I might have a just in case gift in my bag. I have been to parties where I was the only one not bringing a gift and the only one who did so at least with my plan I don't feel awkward! If it is a close friend (for me or a lo) I will usually get something I know they will like anyway just because I enjoy it.

I wouldn't and I'd be a little irritated if someone did for one of our parties! Well probably ask for no gifts once birthday parties start; grandparents give enough toys as it is:)

@Mrs. Bee: I'd bring something for mom and dad (bottle of wine?) but no gifts.
We're going to put "please, no toys" on our invite. We really do not want any more toys. But I would never turn down a bottle of wine.

I was raised to always bring a gift, regardless of what the host requests. I wouldn't show up to a dinner party without at least a bottle of wine so I'm certainly not going to go to a birthday party empty handed. However, I would gift something small and easy to transport so that it wasn't a hassle (like a gift card).

I wouldn't b/c that's what was requested. Especially since you don't know why they requested that. Ie. We almost had a present-less birthday for DS this year b/c he went through an "ungrateful" stage. We told ALL of our friends & family that he wasn't to get ANYTHING new until he resolved it... thankfully for him he did about 2 months out from his birthday. Had he not though we would've said "no gifts" and would've been pretty upset had he still gotten some.

I wouldn't bring a gift if that was the request.

We recently went to a 5 year old's party where instead of gifts, they asked for donations to a few charities to choose from. Maybe you could ask the family if there are any charities they'd appreciate some support for?

I think a card with a gift card would be fine but I wouldn't bring a large wrapped gift.

I would still bring a gift... it would just feel odd to show up to a party without one. But like other posters have said, I'd bring something small to transport.

I’m very uncomfortable attending parties/going to other people’s homes without bringing something, so I would bring a card and a gift card or something that could fit in my purse. If no one else brings a gift, I might leave the gift card in my bag for another party haha, that’s terrible; but I hate going empty handed as a guest, but would also be mortified if I was the only one who didn’t show up with a gift.

I've never gone to a party that said no gifts, but I wouldn't bring a gift if asked not to...

oh scratch that! My gparents said no gifts for their 50th anniversary - but all of us kids/grandkids/nieces/nephews etc all put together an album for them with letters from each of us.
