DS is 26 months old, and after a late start becoming more and more verbal. We can have all kinds of conversations with him, he can describe things, remember things, make things up, but he never answers when we ask him why. Why did you do that, why do you want that, etc. He just answers back "why?" It's kind of funny. But I'm wondering developmentally, when can they typically answer a why question?

Yeah, my 2.5 year old is nowhere near actually answering why. We have to prompt her and she usually agrees with whatever we say to her why ("why are you crying?" "Are you sad?" "Yes, I'm sad")

My LO is 2.5 and answers the question but with no meaningful information. To use the example above if we asked her why she was crying she would say "because I am"

@MoonMoon: my daughter is 25 months and extremely verbal compared with other kiddos the same age in her daycare room. She is just starting to answer with "because," although the response isn't always clear. (For example,"why were you crying? Because I cry today").

My 35 month old has been answering it for several months. She's pretty advanced verbally though.
Why are you crying? "Because so and so was mean to me"
Why are you screaming? "I'm excited!"
Why is the house destroyed? "because I messed it up!" Lol -
@MoonMoon: my 2.5 year old still does this - you'll ask him "but why?!" and he answers "why?"

@danda: Yes this is often what my 29 month old does too. Sometimes it makes sense but often it is just like you described. He does use the word because or 'cuz.

Did is 31 months and just starting to understand why and because but can't always respond correctly most of the time.

DD is 28 months and answers "because". I think it's super cute

I have been closely watching DD (24 months) for the last couple of days to see if she can answer the question "why?" - and I'm convinced she can! In the last few days, we have had:
"Why did you wake up three times last night?"
"I crying"
"Why were you crying?"
"I need cuddle"."Come here so I can brush your hair"
"No!"
"Why not?"
"It hurts"and, my personal favourite, while we were walking in the woods:
"I'm a bit sad, mummy"
"Why are you sad?"
"Because I poo"
It's official, she's a genius!
