I think I was in high school when I took over cooking the turkey. I helped my mom in years past.

Uhhhh, I never have...
In my defence, I don't eat meat, so someone else always takes that job!

In 2011 right after we got married, it looked good but I couldn't eat it after cleaning it! Gag! I haven't cooked another turkey since.

Never, well I've made turkey breast for dinner, but never made the whole bird. I don't know when I will get the opportunity to host, not until we move into a bigger house!

Wow, I'm surprised so many of you have never cooked a turkey. I've done it every year since we got married (well, unless we go home and go to DH's uncle's house where he does the cooking). We, also, moved away from family 6 years ago, so the only way to have Thanksgiving was to cook dinner myself. I've gotten pretty good at getting the sides to be ready when the turkey is done.

I started hosting last year, so that was the first time! I'm trying a different way (Alton Brown) this year

2011 was the first and only time I cooked a turkey! It wasn't as hard as I thought, although both my mom and my MIL kind of took over after I got it in the oven, haha.

Last year we grilled a big turkey breast, but I have yet to cook a whole turkey!

Going with a breast is the way to go! And 10x better, IMO! Brine that MOFO!

I've never actually cooked one. Even when we host Thanksgiving (last year and this year) my parents still do the cooking, haha.

I still haven't!
I went from my dad making it (I wasn't yet interested in cooking), to my chef roommate making it (she wouldn't accept help, to D's aunt making it and refusing help (D would pitch a fit if we had Thanksgiving anywhere besides his aunt's cabin on the Bay, and I would too. So relaxing.). I just haven't had a chance. I help a lot with the rest of the meal, though.
I do have a certificate for a free turkey, though, so maybe in a few weeks, just for a special Sunday night dinner or something

I never have and I imagine I never will! DH is a vegetarian and I'm more into the sides than the turkey. I usually make salmon since that's a special treat and DH will eat fish. I'll also make yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and brussels sprouts. I've been known to use tofurkey for a leftover sandwich

Freshman year of college. All my friends were far from home and everyone was around for break, so I made Thanksgiving dinner. I had to call my parents every 15 minutes because I had no clue what I was doing, but it turned out well!

I never have! My stepdad is a chef, so when we spend thanksgiving with him, we don't mess with the turkey. At my in law's, my FIL is usually in charge of it and I don't feel comfortable helping or taking over. We have never had thanksgiving at our house.

Next week will be my first time, following Alton Brown's recipe for the brine.

I've helped my mom from when I was a teenager, but I did my first full thanksgiving dinner the first year we were married. I probably cook 20 whole chickens a year though so kinda similar.

I have never hosted thanksgiving or cooked a turkey. I would like to someday!

I've only cooked one twice before. Both times, I used the Alton Brown method, so I'm afraid to deviate from it.

In 2011! I made my first thanksgiving dinner. It came out so delicious! I was shocked. But I did have a couple of chef friends to share recipes and advice and I worked hard on it.

Last year! Just DD 1 & I went to visit my family so so since DH wasn't around I cooked the bird. We didn't eat turkey growing up nor celebrate Thanksgiving.
@blackbird: nooo, dark meat is my favorite! But I can tolerate the white meat because we brine as well. We leave it for turkey clubs the next day!

I was about 24. We didn't go home so we cooked for friends. I didn't allow enough time for that big bird to cook, so it was comical! We waited all day for it. But the sides and dessert were great!

I decided to never cook a whole turkey again. Instead, I've done ham, whole chicken, or a turkey breast. Nobody seems to like turkey enough to make it worth the effort.

@regberadaisy: gah nooo it's all greasy! i actually prefer turkey sandwiches over anything else

I never have - I've cooked many whole chickens but never a turkey. We always go to family at Christmas!

I make one every year and have for the last decade or so, if we don't host thanksgiving then we'll have friends over at some point at make one. We love brined turkey! Also my current employer gives out a turkey and ham every year so that is part of the reason the tradition continues.
Last year we started making stock the next day as well and we'll continue that because it allows us to make small batches of turkey and dumplings all year.

In college when I was probably 20. It still was the best tasting turkey I've ever cooked!

I think I was 22? It turned out awesome! I've always been pretty into cooking though.

After being my parents' sous chef for years I realized turkey is for the birds lol. So, I have yet to make a whole turkey on my own.
