I don't mean timeouts, but being stern and saying "no" to discourage certain behaviour? LO is 8.5 months and i have been being firm in my no's (no smiling even though i am dying to!) when she starts to est domething dirty or crawl over to an area i want her to stay away from. i know she is too young to fully understand, and she doesn't always listen to me, but is it too early to start?

Good question! My husband and I were just talking about when we would need to start disciplining our 4.5 month old so I'm eager to read everyone's responses.
My daughter has started pulling my hair when she's nursing and I say no in a firm voice and unlatch her. She's too little to understand the word no but I think she's starting to get the point that if she does that she has to take a break from eating.
Once she starts crawling we plan to use a firm "no" and flick her hands.

I've tried using a firm 'no' with no smiling on L when she bites me during nursing, but so far, she thinks it's just a game and bursts out laughing :T (She's 10 months old)

My LO is 8 months, and we've been saying "no" for a few weeks now. He already hits when he doesn't get his way...lovely.

He is 10 months and I have done a little discipline here and there. Most of the times I focus on redirection because I know that half the time he just doesn't understand. It's best to take them out of the situation.
But somethings I am firm with. I flicked his hand once when he took his bowl and threw it on the floor because he was done eating. He wasn't happy about that! But instead of giving him an opportunity to do it again, I just don't give him dishes anymore.
@MungBean: When Cobi started doing this, and sometimes still does, I started flicking his cheek. Initially he never even realized I was the one inflicting pain, and he learned to associate biting during nursing = pain. Sometimes he will do it sporadically and I flick him again, and he cries for a couple seconds before latching back on, then he won't do it for a few more days.

@bree72: haha! My nephew bites my sister when he doesn't get his way - it's like his "release". Even if she's not around when he gets mad, he has this need to bite something, even just a toy!

We started as soon as he was doing things he shouldn't (serious things like biting during nursing or harassing the dogs). We didn't always say no, we did things like "Not for baby", "Not for touching", "Gentle", etc. So by 6 months probably. He started time outs at about 12 months old. But really, there isn't much for us that was a no, so he doesn't get told it much.

@MungBean: Every time i say "no" she looks at me and gives me this sly smile. I have to summon all of my strength not to burst out laughing. My friend also does a flick to her LO's chin, and he has stopped biting during nursing. I am so glad my LO does not have teeth yet!

I think whenever baby is doing something it shouldn't its OK to say no.

@MungBean: I ended up stopping it when I screamed really loud and pulled him off. We both ended up crying but he hasn't bitten since. A technique that the La Leche group recommends is actually pulling them closer. It will smoosh thier nose a little and they will open their mouth to breath. So they stop biting and in theory they don't like that.

At around the same age - 7/8 months. As soon as she was crawling and getting into things is when I had to start with my stern nos.

L doesn't have any teeth either but she still "bites" down really hard with her gums and it HURTS so much!!

DS is 4.5 months and I gave him a very stern "No" and pulled him off when he bit me--hard--nursing last night. It didn't seem to do anything so I think I'll try the cheek flicking. Poor baby's teething, so I don't think he's doing it on purpose or anything, but man it hurt!

DD is 6 months old and I've been repeating the word "gentle" whenever she pulls my hair or manhandles my face. I know she doesn't understand, but I (like to) think it's helping.

I think that early on is good as long as you can be consistent with it. My LO knows the "look" already!
