I started when she was about a month old because it took that long for her umbilical stump to fall off. I just did it when I thought about it. No set schedule or anything. Prior to then she got decent work on her neck control when she laid on our chests.

After his umbilical cord stump fell out, at about 14 days. I did it both on my chest and on the mat, for as long as he would tolerate it during each awake period (he never tolerated it for more than a few minutes at a time before he started screaming).

At about a week, when his umbilical cord stump fell off. We weren't (and aren't) great about doing it a ton--we tried to do it 2-3x a day for as long as he would stand--usually 5-8 minutes at the most.

i didn't really know i had to until he was almost a month old. my doctor told me to do it 10-15 times per day, which i never found possible to do, but i tried and ended up doing around 5 - 7 times per day i guess? As for how long each time, that depended on how long he could take it. sometimes less than a minute, sometimes over 10-15. as he got older and more used to it, he was able to go for longer. now he doesn't cry at all and lasts about 10 minutes each time. but i also don't do it 5 times a day anymore. maybe 3?

i did a few seconds of tummy time the first day we brought LO home, just to see what would happen--he actually held his head up. i didn't know i was supposed to wait until the umbilical cord fell off. he's 8 weeks old now, and i'm pretty loosey goosey about it--about once or twice a day for a few minutes. sounds like i'm on the low end, oops!

We started in the NICU at around 36 weeks? We still see OT and she wants 3x or 30 mins a day at least. She says developmentally that everything is tied to tummy time. It's hard to get it in, but I try to make it a priority. He doesn't mind it much so I'll put him down there while I make his bottle or grab something in the kitchen (in line of sight).

At my LO's 2 month check up her pediatrician told me to have her do tummy time the whole time she is awake. I looked at her like she's crazy. Then she said okay, 15 minutes, 4x a day. That's still a lot! I only do a few minutes a day here and there. I started when her umbilical cord fell off but LO hates tummy time...cries after a few minutes so I just flip her over and will try again later. Although this week she is doing MUCH better and is lifting her head and upper body on the boppy. She just turned 12 weeks old.

S's cord fell off at 4 days, so we started doing it a little bit then. We mostly do it when she lays on our tummies or chests, but we occasionally put her on the boppy or the mat of her little gym. She does great when she's on us. We aren't diligent about doing it on flat surfaces, since she doesn't really like it, and I hate to make her mad.

I started right away. At nearly 3 months, I put LO down for tummy time several times per day and leave him until he gets too frustrated to enjoy it anymore. He's always seemed to like it, though.

Thanks for all the input - looks like there's a huge variation. DS is 3 weeks old now and I've done it with him only 3x so far for as long as he's willing to tolerate it, but I think I need to make it more of a priority.
@PurpleUnicorn: wow, 10-15x/day is a lot! That's at least once every other hour.
@photojane: S' cord fell off quick! DS's cord didn't fall off until he was 2.5 weeks.

Yikes! I've honestly been terrible about this. I only do it 1-2x pet day, for maybe 5 min. I know they do it at daycare, but not sure how often. I'll have to ask and make a point to do it more.

@Mrs. High Heels: ya i know its crazy! i was so stressed about it for so long and finally realized no one does that and their babies turn out fine. I think it pushed me to do it more often and be more aware of how important it is though.

We started around 10 days after his stump fell off. We do it 1-2 times a day for a few minutes. He also spends a lot of time on our chests.
