We started at 12 months. We use a fluoride-free toothpaste with xylitol as recommended by our pediatric dentist. It's called Spry. Xylitol is supposed to be the next best thing (second to fluoride) that you can use to prevent cavities. I got it at Kidsland, but it's on Amazon too. I think it's made by the same company that makes the banana toothbrush.

We were advised to use children's toothpaste as soon as we started brushing his teeth. I think it's part of the reason LO actually asks us to brush his teeth.

Woah, when we asked our pediatrician about it, she said follow the tube directions and all the ones I've seen say 2. I wanted to use toothpaste with her because I thought it would make brushing easier - maybe I should re-investigate!

We've used the Colgate infant fluoride free paste since we started brushing at 4 months. He has 8 teeth now at 8 months, so I think it's important to get him used to really brushing at this point.

@autumnlove: until they can learn how to rinse, it's recommended that you use fluoride-free. once they learn, you can move on to toothpaste with fluoride... i didn't teach my older DD to spit til after she was 2 yo.
