T has become a pretty good sitter, but doesn't know how to get himself out of the sitting position without falling. How will I know when I can leave him sitting on the floor by himself?

As soon as she was able to sit for a few minutes. It didn't take long. She started sitting on a Wednesday and I was leaving her by herself by Monday or Tuesday. Except for a few times, she only fell to her side, not backwards. It took only a day or so for her to figure out how to catch herself and to get out of the sitting postion without flopping.

@Weagle: Wow, that's fast! My LO started sitting about a month ago and only in the past week got really sturdy.

@winniebee: It was pretty fast. I was surprised. She's always been a strong baby, and she was capable of sitting long before she was confident enough to.
ETA: I hope this didn't come across as "omg, my baby is so special." She's pretty average when it comes to physical milestones, I think. She's also kind of a scaredy cat. So, it will take her forever to attempt a milestone, but she masters it pretty quickly once she does.

Can you have him sit with the boppy around him? Then he kind of has a bumper unless he goes straight forward, but sometimes they will put their hands out that way.

It took a month with DS after he learned to sit up. But I bought soft tiles for him so he wouldn't get too hurt if he did fall. With DD, it's taken much longer and even though she's been sitting up for a month, I probably won't let her sit up without me around for another month or so? Maybe longer. She topples over so easily! Although, big bro does like to catch her

@mrs. bird: I'm trying to avoid giving him any support because I want him to learn on his own. I have put a bunch of pillows around him to cushion his fall!

I always do... I just keep my legs near him to soften the blow if needed but I let him tumble a good deal. I think as soon as he was sitting I was letting him tumble but I definitely supported his falls more then than now.
