DS is six months old and he is so darn heavy in his infant car seat! I usually just leave the car seat in the car and take him in and out. I think the only reason I'm hesitant is that it is nice to be able to take the whole seat out when he falls asleep. We already have the convertible car seats, I'm just not sure when to start using them. When did you make the switch?

She is 6.5 months and we haven't switched yet but we will have to make the switch soon. She is going to grow out of it pretty soon, she's getting too long.

LO is 7 months and we haven't made the switch yet. She hasn't hit the weight limit and since she's a pretty small baby, I think she'll outgrow the infant seat by height first. I think we'll probably do the switch around the one year mark?

LO will be 6 months next week and we are ordering in the next couple weeks. She's 29" tall, so she's very shortly going to max out her infant seat.

We switched half of the time at 5.5 months. At 7 months he still uses the infant seat if we are going in DH's car. We just bought a 2nd convertible (diono radian on sale!!) today so we will make the full switch next week!

My LO is small (13 lbs at 4.5 months) but I still hate carrying her around in her infant seat. I almost always leave it in the car and carry her or wear her in the Moby wrap. I hate those stupid car seats! SOOOOO heavy!!!!!

We bought the convertible around 4 months but just as a second seat for my husbands car.

Thanks ladies! We are taking a road trip in a couple weeks, I think I might just try out the convertible car seat then and see how it works for us. The only time I actually carry him in it is dropping him off at daycare so DH will have the car seat when he does pick up. The rest of the time DH carries it to and from the car =) But it would be nice to not have to carry it at all.

We switched my son at around 6 months because he outgrew it (height). My DD is 5.5 months and we probably won't switch it out until 7 months or so. I love the convenience of the infant car seat (not having to wake her while she's sleeping) so we're gonna keep her in there for as long as possible. Plus, the patrol officer who installed our car seats told me that the infant seat is the safest for babies, followed by rear facing convertible seat, then forward facing convertible, then booster. So he recommended we keep her in the infant seat for as long as possible.

@littlek - thanks for bumping, this was a good read for me! DS is 6 months old and SO heavy in the carrier, so I told DH that we're making the switch this weekend.

Did anyone start with a convertible? My husband did all the research and it says all car seats are held to the same standards and are safe - so is the infant seat just a convenience because you can carry the infant in the seat? I was so confident in our choice but now I'm second guessing...

@JerricaBenton: it's really convenient to be able to take the bucket seat out and not wake up your LO! When our LO was brand new she napped at restaurants, while running errands, etc in her carseat. Even now at 6.5 months she falls asleep on the way home some days and I bring her inside and let her finish her catnap. I'm dreading switching but we're going to try out convertible seats tomorrow!

@jerricabenton: just a convenience thing for us. DS loves sleeping in his carrier so it was super convenient to be able to bring him into the house without disturbing him!

DD is 9 months, and we just made the switch. She is almost 30 inches which is the maximum height for the infant seat, so it was time to switch her to her big girl carseat.

@littlek: We switched in my car at 9m because I was leaving the seat in the car anyway. In DH's car we just switched last week at 12.5m because Little M reached the height limit on his infant seat. Past a month or two old he wouldn't stay asleep when I tried to move the seat out of the car, so that was never an issue.

@JerricaBenton: I WISH WE DID!! We have the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 in both of our cars now with the tiny fit. If there is a next time around, I won't be using an infant seat. I carried Little M in the Ergo everywhere anyway, and hated having the infant seat in the house.

Thought I would update with what we did =)
We put the convertible car seat in my husbands car for our trip and he loved it so we left it in. I ended up just keeping the infant seat in my car and would only take it out if he fell asleep. At 9 months I made the switch to the convertible seat in my car since he was almost at the height limit for his infant seat.

@Mrs. Stroller: Yay! I plan on using the Ergo when we're out too and I also don't think I'd want to carry the car seat in and out of the house.
I do get the convenience factor of not waking the baby up to go inside...but I still think we're going with the convertible with infant insert from day one.
