Most of the shoes I gravitate towards happen to be hard soled. How long after they start walking is it safe to make the switch?
ETA: He would still be barefoot 95% of the time.

I think we switched afte she was walking for 2 months.

she got hard soles about 2 months after she was a full time walker (although the majority were soft soles) and she did fine! she still has a mix of soft and hard at 18 months (FT walker at 11.5 months)

C started walking right at 10 months and we bought him his first hard soled sneakers from SKR for his first birthday. So at that point he'd been walking for 2 months! He doesn't wear them that often (like B, is barefoot most of the time!) but they look super cute when he does.

we waited a while, probably around 15 months when he'd been walking for 6 months. He grew out of soft soled - otherwise I would've kept him in them longer!

We went from Pediped Originals to the Grip n Go when he had been walking for about 6 weeks (big feet, outgrew the 18-24 months around 1 year). He's a few days from 15 months and we just moved on to the Flex shoes and is doing great (like others, he's still barefoot unless he's outside).

@scg00387: That's one of our problems, he just turned one and he's already a size 6.

Try Livie and Luca baby soft soles! The size 18/24m is slightly larger than a size 6. They have great sales, check zappos and 6pm.

I feel like I kept her in Pediped Originals for a long time! She didn't really start walking till around 13-14 mos, but I felt like they were fine for most of her outdoor activities until she was closer to 2.

At 15 months we are still in soft and I will keep her in them for awhile yet but she has small feet. I was told they should be in soft until they have a proper gait etc.

@Arden: DS's first hard soles were Livie and Luca, about 3 months after he started walking. I liked them and the style was super cute, but the color wore off of the toes really fast, so they ended up looking very worn after just a few weeks.

We switched when we bought LO's 2nd pair of shoes, so he had been walking for about 3 months. But they were sneakers and still had a pretty flexible sole, they just weren't a "first walker" brand (they were new balance). This was also in the winter though, so I wanted something with more protection from the cold ground, mud, etc.

We put DD in a pair of hard soles when she'd been walking about two months. We switched back and forth for a while depending on where we'd be and if she'd be outside (Canadian winter) but now is in hard soles exclusively at 18 months.

We actually put her in hard soles right away. She started walking in February. She was very steady. She never wore shoes in the house, where she did most of her walking. I just couldn't put her in soft soles out in the snow and cold.

We started her in partially hard soles when she got good at walking. We had these shoes from Target - http://www.target.com/p/infant-girl-s-genuine-kids-from-oshkosh-abigail-ballet-flat-pink/-/A-14568895#prodSlot=dlp_medium_1_10&term=genuine+kids
We switched to complete hard soles when the weather got nicer and she was going to be walking more outside. So she was about 14-15 months and had been walking for about 6 months.

@Arden: maybe it depends on the style? Or maybe DS was klutzier than your DD when he was that age. I was really disappointed.

@lamariniere: Haha, it could easily be the style. We have two different styles and they are quite a bit different from each other.
