We are waiting until at least 3 to visit the dentist. Maybe 4, it just depends on our kiddo and when she shows she is ready to go.
When did your lo see the dentist?

We haven't gone yet, so I didn't vote, but we're planning on going when he's 2.

i don't have kids but i am a dental hygienist. i think 3 is a good age to get them to go, not necessarily to even have anything in their mouth... we call them "happy visits" and can be scheduled whenever a parent has an appointment (before or after). we basically let them ride the chair, we show them the mirror, put some glasses on them and make them open wide to count their teeth. give them some goodies and send them on their way. it just helps to alleviate anxiety and get them ready for the first time they have to get xrays, polish, etc done!
just what we used to do at my old office

My dentist is going to take a quick peek next time I go in. He'll probably have a real appointment at 18 months to check his lip tie revision.

Our pediatrician recommended taking her in before she was 2, but due to my laziness at making the appointment + the usual long wait for an appointment, she’s going next week at 25 months. I don’t want to wait much longer and wish I had gotten her in sooner in case there are issues that we could start correcting now (i.e., pacifier use, cavities, whatever)

My good friend's dad is a dentist and he always recommends you start taking kids at 2 so that's what we'll do.

I heard its recommended to take them in for the first appointment around 1 year old. Our insurance doesn't cover it but I am bringing LO in in a few weeks and its only going to be 50 bucks.

We started at 18 months and plan on going every six months. But he won't have his first cleaning until 3 unless he shows a need for it sooner. Right now we just go in and the dentist counts his teeth and does a quick check.

@loki: yeah for another hygienist on the boards!
I took DD starting at 6 mths only because I work there

We took #1 at 2, but there was no need. We will wait until 3 for future kiddos when they have all their teeth in and are more mature and understand much more.

@mediagirl: I didn't vote because at 2 he watched my visit and sat in the chair but didn't have his own visit. I'm thinking 2.5 or 3.

@lavender: Woo! I'm not actively practicing right now though...
I'm shocked at all these super early responses. I've never seen a patient younger than 3 in my chair and none of the dentists I've worked for ever recommended that early. But I can see the value and will add to my last response and say as early as you can is probably great. I've just never seen it before!

we just did our first appt last week a few days shy of 18 months. it was more a "getting to know you" and getting advice since DD has all her teeth besides her 2 year molars. i'm glad we went as the dentist was super helpful and gave us good advice and DD got comfortable there. he also gave DH some advice about canker sores, so it was a good visit.
they recommended coming again in 6 months, but we'll wait until her other molars are completely in. she did not get a cleaning!

@loki: This is on the FAQ page of the pediatric dentist we'll be using. Open enrollment for our dental insurance isn't until October, so we'll take her once we add her to our insurance (she'll be 14-15 months).

@lawbee11: makes sense, I've just never worked in a practice that went that.... And I've worked at a lot of practices, including a national "franchise".

I meant to do it at 18 months but I just made an appt for this week. She's a couple months shy of two.

Our dentist recommended 2, so that's when we'll take him. I'm going on saturday so if I can swing it, I'll bring him with me so that he can see what it's all about!

We'll make an appointment after I move him onto my insurance in October, so shortly after he turns 2.

We have an amazing pediatric dentist in my city and we did his first visit at just under 2 years. It was just to let him get used to the office and to make sure there weren't any changes we needed to be making with his hygiene. The dentist scraped just a little tartar buildup off his lower teeth in the front, but it wasn't necessary. He was just behaving well so they like to see how far they can go when they're that young. We'll go every 6 months after. Not sure when they start actual cleanings.

I always thought it was around the first birthday. DD wasn't quite 18 months when we went. I think it's more about them getting comfortable with the experience and making sure us parents are trying to brush with them and not creating bad habits.

My LO is 19 months and it had never crossed my mind... maybe 2.5 or 3

R was sent to a pediatric dentist at 11 months old for a possible abscess.

I voted 0-6 months because I am a dentist
I examine her all the time!
I see first time patients at our office from 6 months up. Definitely not unusual for me to see at least 3-4 kids under 3 a day! I see them in the hygienists operator just checking. If they need work that young, obviously they will need sedated.

We did it at 16 months, though I heard you were suppose to do it before a year which people have confirmed here. It was pretty easy going. LO did well.

We did it before a year and will continue to every 6 months. It's been fine!

Both our ped and my dentist say to take them at 3 years, so that's when we'll take them.

2. My ped and dentist recommend two or when all their teeth are in. Considering she had all her teeth in by 22 months. Her pediatric dentist recommends kids start going at 2. Her next appoint is in November.
My cousin in law gives even less sweets and candies than I do and her almost 3 year old has the start of a cavity. They waited to take her when she was almost three.

My DD will be one this week, but already has eight teeth, and a molar coming in. We might be early birds, in regards to dental exams, but I'm uncertain. I'm going to ask my ped at our annual exam and see what's common at his practice.

@anonysquire: Wow that's early! But she is an early teether! Good luck with that!
Lo was I think around 16ish months. It was recommended by the ped! We were supposed to go even earlier. She has her next appt just before her 2nd bday. The dentist said she's seen cavities as young as ~16 months.
