LO1 is two and she still hasn't been to the dentist yet. I'm curious when others brought their LO to the dentist for the first time. If you have yet to bring your LO, when do you plan on bringing them?

I took her at 13 months! And I was glad I did because 4 months later she was walking, slipped, and chipped off a piece of the bottom of our stair bannister with her tooth!!! I was so glad I had a dentist to call and visit the next day!! (She is fine and her tooth is fine)

We went at 15 months. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends by the first birthday, but even at her second appointment at 21 months, DD had trouble with stranger anxiety and sitting still. Her dentist was awesome with it though! She has kids the same age and said she brought them in around the same age for their first check up and cleaning.

@Bao: Her pediatrician said at least once before 3. I asked at my cleaning when she was around 18 months (we go to a family dentist) and they said there was no point going before 2. So she came with my to my appointment when she was around 2 and sat in the chair and they counted her teeth and gave her a toothbrush. Then at 2 1/2 they did an actual cleaning (again after my cleaning) and she did awesome! So we are now going together every 6 months.

@Ginabean3: oh wow, that would be scary! @MamaCate: that's a good idea, going together!

@blackbird: thank you. This is the first time I've ever heard 3. Our lo is 2 and we plan on taking her sometime after she turns 3 for the first time.

We haven't gone yet but my ped said this year (between one and two) and my dentist said when she has all her teeth or between two and three. He also said to basically do like what @MamaCate: said- come in while I'm having a cleaning, sit in the chair and have the dentist or hygienist talk to her but not really do anything and just make it fun, then a few months later do a real appt. she already comes with me when I get cleanings and likes the people there at least.

I just made an appt for T for February and he will be 3 months shy of age 3. That will be his first visit.

@mediagirl: Yep! I had to text my MIL about it and I figure she knows what's up

My dentist said between 2-3. Frankly it isn't going to go well so I am in no hurry. It is a struggle to get her to let me brush her teeth. A dentist doesn't stand a chance.

@Smurfette: haha I'm hoping the dentist will help with teeth brushing in our house!

He went for the first time just before 2 years, and it was just a quick checkup/meet the Dr. type thing. He just made sure there were no cavities and that it looked like we were brushing his teeth well.
He went for his first cleaning in September at 2.5 years and it went great. Full cleaning and X-rays.

Not yet!
I will say I love seeing adorable 1-2 year olds for cleanings. Sometimes they do surprisingly well and they're so freaking cute!!!!!

My dentist said not until she's three, unless I want to take her to a pediatric dentist. I will wait until she is three

I just went for a cleaning this past week myself and my dentist said they just changed the recs and the AAP says to bring them in whenever they have teeth or at 1 years old. Went to our pedi a couple days later and she said the same thing. They also said you can do toothpaste for the littles but you just scrape it so there's a film, not a glob.
We'll probably make an appt around her first birthday so she can get familiar with the office.

Taking DS this morning for the first time at 10 months. My health visitor said it is good to take them early just to get them used to it! I have a check up myself so I imagine they will just have a quick look at him after. I think this will be a good age to start as he's still very chill around strangers.

We went at 11 months and have been doing every six month checkups since.

Started right before two and will go every 6 months. Our pediatrician said we could've waited until 3 though.

Just after 2 which is when my pediatrician and her dentist recommends. Everyone you ask has a different opinion! LOL
It's more about getting them comfortable with the visits than anything. We actually go back next week for her next appointment.

I just took my son a few weeks ago, he'll turn 4 in December. The most the hygenist could do was get him to open his mouth and let her count his teeth. She was able to confirm he had no cavities.

we went at 8 months because a suitcase fell on LO and knocked his tooth out. we went again in about 6 months. we've moved to a new area and i called about when to bring him in (he's 22 months), and i think i will wait until he's after 2.

@MamaCate: That's what I want to do with D - take him with us once just to watch, then again for his first cleaning (like I get my cleaning first, then his turn). I think that will help ease his anxiety a lot.

We went for the first time last week. LO is over 3. I think the dentist would have preferred younger. Our ped recommended 2+. Thankfully she's a fairly good brusher and her teeth were cavity free.

18 months, they didn't clean they just looked in and put a protector on the molars. We go back in a couple months to look again and just get her used to the idea (first time was rough!)

@littlebug: yeah it worked really well and since they are set up for kids they had a little table with coloring books and activites. I was least fly surprised by how well it went!!

2.5 years old. We took her to a pediatric dental clinic and the set up was great. She didn't cry, and most importantly had no cavities!

She was 2 (26-27ish months)and it was just a consultation. She went back for her first cleaning about 6 months later.
