Got a video of DS who is 11.5 months old opening the gate to the kitchen. It wasn't locked but it was closed enough that they couldn't push it open.
He lifted the handled all the way to get it to swing open.
We now have to lock the gate.
Oh, the main purpose of the gate before the babies came was to keep the dogs out of the kitchen.

We have that same gate! Ds (10.5m) has been able to get it open for awhile now but I'm not sure exactly when it happened..maybe 8-9m? He can't do it if it's locked though. It took dd longer- she was I think closer to 1.5 before she started opening it. But it was at MIL's house for her dogs then!

@2littlepumpkins: I thought I had a while (like closer to 2) before they would figure that out. I guess I'm underestimating what they are capable of. 
Oh and yup, the gate was up for years before the babies came. It was for the dogs.

3.5 and hes nowhere near being able to open it! he could probably climb over if he wanted to though.

Ours don't have handles so DD still hasn't been successful at 24 months.

DS is 3 and still can't open our gate. We don't use the gate anymore, but it's attached to one side of the banister on the stairwell and remains open.

@bluestriped bee: yeah it seems hit or miss! We had it at the bottom of stairs we didn't use and he saw his sister do it many times, then he was obsessed with the stairs. So as soon as he could pull up that's exactly where he went, and once he did it sort of by accident he started to learn.
My DD had less incentive.

DD knows where she has to go to open it but can't yet since you have to push and lift. I hope she never gets it! Ahh!

my DS knows how to open that type of gate at my mom's house but he hasn't figured ours at home out yet, thankfully. He is getting pretty good at stairs but not enough to be trusted.

@bluestriped bee: If we close the gate to the kitchen without locking it LO can open it. she has been able to do that for a while. the gate at the top of the stairs swings locked and she cant open it
