Sadie's only 13 months, so I'm not counting on this happening anytime soon, but just wondering - when did your LO learn to put things away when you asked (helping and/or alone)? Can't wait for the day... my living room is literally always a disaster.

22 months and we are working on it....

We're working on it now, at 2 years old! He made up his own cleanup song all of his own initiative haha! I have to tell him that before getting out a new toy, we need to clean up the other one and he's been great about it thus far! However, it hasn't helped actually keep our house clean lol but it's a start!

We try to have him put a few things back every night before bath time! But this is a looooooooong road to actual clean-up help!

I think it was around 18 mos that he was better at following directions. The hard part is ensuring that they clean up after each activity, for us at least. I try to do that (they do it at preschool) but it seems like one activity is just naturally part of the next one. My DS has responded really well to a toy rotation system and having fewer toys to play with theoretically means less mess although I still always feel like everything is a mess.

18 months now and if we stay on him throughout the process he'll put them all away.

I'd start trying now! I remember babysitting a 12 month old who put his toys away. Was the freakiest thing ever. I asked his mom about it and she said they had just always done it together from when he was very young.

@Mrs. Pen: Ha... that is so precious! I'm anxious for her to learn the one at a time thing. She just pulls everything out, dumps every basket, takes out every book, starts throwing things around, and then finds one random thing in the pile of mess to play with.
@shellio: We don't really have the storage to do a toy rotation. She has a few toys in her room, but they're basically all in our living room. I wish we could do only a few at a time though.

R started putting away blocks last month. but that's when i am sitting right there and i make it fun. she will do it when other kids are doing it at storytime too.

@Grace: ha! I've tried! She just looks at me like I'm an idiot. I show her how to put the books away, and ask her to help me. She stands there and watches. Then, just goes and pulls all of the books back out! haha

@photojane: oh yeah, he does that too. I am like WHY must you dump the entire bin of legos to build a tower of five legos!!! And right now there are no books on his shelf.

@photojane: Maybe his mom had the patience of a saint and kept trying over and over. ...or he was a freak of nature and just liked to put things away?

She's 15 mo and helps put things back in the box at her play gym. Just some small things now but it's a good start!

Around 17 months she got the concept of putting it away. We just do a big clean up before her bedtime routine. She loves putting her blocks back into their bag!

@Grace: haha maybe! I'm pretty patient, but I can't put the same books away 20 times. I'll go nuts!

Lo started putting things away at 14 months but we realized he's a bit OCD like me, I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but he's extremely particular. He will freak out if I rotate his toys into a different cubby.

DD is 15 months, and she's been helping for a few weeks. She'll put her books away, and if she sees me doing it, she'll put away her blocks too. It's still early and inconsistent, but it's a promising start, and I'm being SUPER encouraging of it, ha
