DD will be two this weekend. Whenever we ask her if she's a girl or a boy she says she's a boy. She's even corrected me when I've said "you're such a big girl!" When we ask her if mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa, etc are girls or boys she gets it right about 50% of the time. When did your LO seem to really understand gender and his/her gender?

She started asking a lot about people being boys/girls about a month before her 2nd birthday (her birthday was the 8th). It still confuses her, though, and she doesn't really understand what distinguishes the two. At this point she's just trying to group "like" things.

Not yet. His newest phrase is "no boobs" as he looks down his shirt. He likes to look down my shirts and say "boobs." I remind him that they were his main food source for 8 months every time. That's the level of understanding of gender he has at 21 months old.

When he started going to school around age 2.5 he started to "get it" a lot more.

LO is 20 months and suddenly interested in labelling other kids "girl" or "boy" - mostly correctly - but I don't think he really knows what that means. I keep meaning to ask his day care teacher if that's something they've been doing at school because it sure didn't come from me!

hahaha he likes to point out he's a boy and other boys; but sometimes he still calls girls boys, and he won't actually say "girl".

LO is 23 months and has a good understanding of gender – well, an understanding appropriate for her age. She doesn’t really know why/how boys and girls are different, but knows there is a difference and knows that she is a girl.
LO *loves* the old Disney movie The Jungle Book, and she learned that Mowgli is a boy and that the girl at the end of the story is a girl. From there, she was able to figure out who are boys and who are girls in our lives (I’m not really sure how, haha, but that movie seemed to spark some understanding in her).

It has been recent, like in the last few months, that he's gotten it and assigns the correct pronouns.

M is almost 20 months and she identifies all kids who are not babies as "boy".

Well, he labels all adult women as 'moms' and adult men as 'dads.' Does that count? He also only swoons over the cartoon girls!

"Moms" and "dads" too. Just has trouble with kids I guess.
