A friend told me yesterday that her friend who got pregnant through IVF was told she could select gender. I am not an IVF expert and didn't realize that was an option... so question, if you could select gender of your unborn child, would you?

Maybe, if it was presented as a possibility during something like IVF. Especially if i already had girls at home. I dont' think i'd pick for the first baby. Some friends of ours were given the option because they had chromosome screening done on the embryos, so they would knowingly implant 2 girls or 2 boys or 1 of each or whatever.

Probably not. Especially with IVF, I take my "mysteries" where I can get them!

With my 3rd, yes. I have two boys now. If someone told me you get to pick and it cost nothing and was not dangerous in any way, I'd pick girl. But I'm not going out of way to try to make a girl. I'm good with whatever God gives me naturally.

I don't think I would but I really wanted at least one girl and since I have one my answer is kind of colored. I can see being tempted but ultimately I think I would let life take its course.

If we decided to have a 3rd, and there was no risk/no cost/ect. I'd pick a boy since we will have 2 girls. I would never pay for it, half the fun to me is the surprise.

Probably not. Now if you told me I could select a baby that slept through the night, I'd be all over that!

I was actually randomly thinking about this the other day and I ultimately concluded no. I am having a girl and we only want two. I think it would be awesome to have a boy next- most people seem to think one of each is the dream. But it would also be great to have two sisters! I really don't think I could decide which would be more ideal, so I'm glad I don't have to. I would consider it though if I were in a position where one sex is more likely to inherit some sort of condition.

I think I would, especially since guarateeing a girl would get D on the "have another baby" train. Plus it would be amazing to give his family their first girl in 77 years...

Yes, in that situation I would. I have a boy, and I'd really like to get the experience of being a girl mom too.
honeydew / 7303 posts
I wouldnt. I'm going to have one of each and we plan on a third, so either way it doesn't matter! I feel blessed to be able to experience both already.

Ehhhh.... probably not. Seems like just another thing for DH and I to fight about.
Although I'd totally want another girl.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
While I jokingly say I want another boy, I wouldn't take any measures to ensure that. You get what you get - far be it from me to think I know what I need.

My husband really wants a girl and we already have a boy. But I would be ok with two boys. If we even decide to have a second. So I guess I would let him choose a girl if he really felt strongly about it, and if it were my decision alone then I would leave it up to chance.
grapefruit / 4089 posts
Nope, not for my first. I couldn't choose! Possibly for my second since that would be my last.

not unless there was a medical reason for it, like if something would be passed on only for one sex.
papaya / 10343 posts
Nope. I really didn't care either way for our first and if we have a second I don't care either. I think it might be sort of nice to have one of each, but also I think there is an extra bond with same-gendered siblings. So I think it's best to leave it to fate!

We have a girl and I'd love to have one of each, so maybe...but if we have trouble conceiving #2, we won't pursue fertility treatments and will just be one and done, so I don't think we'll ever be in that situation.
nectarine / 2932 posts
Hm. I don't think so! I thought I really wanted a girl but now that I have a boy I would love to have another! I would truly be happy with whatever we have next.
nectarine / 2173 posts
I don't think I would! But hard to know for sure unless I was really in a situation where I could. I think definite no for first child but perhaps for later child, although I still lean toward no...

We did IVF for our twin girls and if we were to do IVF again for a 3rd child & would easily be able to specify a boy, I'd do it.
nectarine / 2878 posts
We have 2 boys that I adore, so I would be great with another boy but if I could pick, I would pick a girl.
pomegranate / 3272 posts
My sister in laws parents did this. . . .34 years ago. They had 3 girls and really wanted a boy. Although, I was told that back then, they could only guarantee boys. I don't know if I believe everything I've been told. . .but that's what I was told.
eggplant / 11716 posts
I would if it were free, just because I think it would be cool to have one of each gender. But I wouldn't want to do it so much that I'd pay for it.
blogger / nectarine / 2600 posts
No but I have one of each already and love being a mom of each I couldnt choose for my last.
grapefruit / 4731 posts
Another person with two boys currently. *If* we try again and we get another boy we would be happy (cost savings and all) but if we could pick we would definitely choose girl for the 3rd one.
pear / 1580 posts
I did IVF with no embryo testing, and that was science-fictiony enough for me! However...if I had two of one gender and I got to choose for the third...I may feel differently.
coconut / 8279 posts
No, but I'm sure my husband would. And that would probably put him 100% on board for Baby#2, so, I'd be game! lol
grapefruit / 4418 posts
Yes for #2 I would select another girl so I can use all her clothes again!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Honestly if there was no risk involved for my 3rd I would pick a girl. I have a son and have another boy on the way so why not?
pomegranate / 3809 posts
Yes, we would pick boys. Raising a girl terrifies me. We asked about the option, but the testing would have run 3-4k, and 3k for the FET so we'll leave it up to chance and I'll be happy with whatever we end up with.
pear / 1787 posts
prior to getting pregnant, i would have chosen a boy if i had the option probably. now i'm attached to this little one and think i might choose a girl for a second... i didn't grow up with a sister and think that would be a really special relationship for her! but i don't know, i would love to experience a boy too! so i'd be happy either way and probably opt not to choose if the choice was given! i'm sure my husband would choose a boy for our second if he could and i'd be happy to oblige if he felt strongly about it.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
yes all the way. assuming it was 100% zero risk for the pregnancy that is. I've always dreamed of having a daughter so if i could pick for one kid, i would do it for sure. I probably would have picked for my first and let the second be a surprise.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
I wouldn't for a first baby. But I'd really like to have at least one of each so I wouldn't be opposed to it for a second baby (to pick the opposite of whatever we had the first time) if it was easy and minimal risk. If we had a third baby, I'd just let nature decide which gender we got 2 of.
