So the various posts on sensory play have gotten me all excited about doing some of these activities with my LO, but for many of the examples, I read it and think "can't do that one, he'd just put everything in his mouth." (LO is 10.5 months)
How old was your LO when s/he stopped trying to just eat or gnaw on everything, and could actually be interested in an object or activity without trying to eat his/her way through it?

Sigh... 27 months and we're still constantly saying "RJ, no mouth". He definitely doesn't NEED to chew on anything anymore but sometimes puts things in his mouth out of habit or just to annoy us. But it definitely stopped being a huge issue probably around 18 months-- he started actually playing with his toys instead of just banging them around and chewing on them.

Don't know - mine is 22 months and she still puts things in her mouth! For the most part she is really good, but she will still randomly stick things into her mouth.

Ugh. I was hoping she would stop putting things into her mouth SOON. My LO's almost 11 months old. She's still teething so I feel like I should let her continue to chew on things..

18 months was when we started coloring and using chalk. he'd try to eat it before then.
but there are plenty of sensory activities you can do that are edible. edible paint, edible playdoh, etc.

@Mrs. Bee: Yeah, I was just re-reading your post about sensory activities. My first thought was "well, if I gave him edible paint for the bathtub, he'd just eat it and wouldn't really play with it," but now I'm thinking that it's probably not fair for me to assume that, and the kid deserves the benefit of the doubt, so I think we'll try this! (and if he paints with it, I will declare him a genius. and if he just eats it? oh well)

Mine still puts stuff in his mouth too at 21 months. Not all the time but enough where I wouldn't trust him with chalk or playdoh, unless it was the edible kind. Just last week he tried putting my chapstick in his mouth.

@Lozza: I gave my 6 month old crayons thinking she would just eat them, but she only tried to put them in her mouth once and she actually drew on the paper. It was so cute!

@banana: charlie loves eating chapstick so you should def keep it away!
@Lozza: you can also "paint" by putting some paint inside a ziploc bag and taping it to a table. then they can't actually touch the paint, but it's still a great sensory activity.

@mrs.bee: LOL. What is it with kids and chapstick? He's always whining for it whenever I put it on me. I have to apply it in secret so that he won't catch me.

We just say, "That's not for eating." Or sometimes, NO, No! Then we take it away if she continues after 2 or 3 warnings.
Our LO is unusual because she didn't try to eat sand even when she was around 6 months. She did try eating paint.
One thing that helps is that when I catch her picking up something 'interesting' is , "Give that to Mommy please." And clap/praise a lot when she does.
Once in awhile, it's too hard to resist so I have to grab it away and give her the "No, not, for eating!"
Our daughter has been drawing a lot from about 8 months old. Before 12 months, it was just random scribbling. But lately 13 months, it is actual deliberate (crooked) lines. She spent 1/2 hour drawing. We give triangular crayons. I noticed she bit one of the restaurant crayons the other day because it didn't have the paper on it....looked like a carrot, I guess.

Ugh, we were just talking about this yesterday when LO ats a TON of dirt when we were gardening in the backyard. I'm bummed that it sounds like we still have a while to go.
