Spinoff on @littlek 's post about toddlers and sports...
Do you plan on teaching your kids any instruments? If so, when do you plan to start? I played piano and violin, and DH played the cello, so we really hope LO will enjoy playing an instrument!

Funny you mention this, because "playing the piano" has become part of my son's night time routine. My husband plays the Wheels on the Bus and he bangs on the keys.
I am in the process of looking for a teacher, he's 2.5 years old.

I don't know when I plan on starting but I'd like to have lots of musical toys very early on! I played the violin and clarinet and it helped me appreciate music so much!

I play lots of instruments and I started teaching DS a bit of piano around 4 years old.

Whenever they show an interest! I played violin and was involved in choir from an early age, and I'd love it if baby girl wanted to play violin too. I wouldn't want to push it on her or any siblings, because I want the process to be enjoyable, not something they 'have to do.'

I probably only will if she asks. DH and I were both band geeks but didn't start until middle school.

He can start Suzuki Strings Violin next year at 3 years old. We have been on the waiting list since he was 18 months old. It is the only thing he can start that young. But he watches me play both cello and piano.

LOs been banging on our keyboard since she could move her hands. I might start trying to show her more things this winter when she's 2.5 but I don't think much will happen yet except more exposure.
I started piano lessons when I was 5 but could play little songs earlier than that so we'll see when she develops enough patience to learn some songs. There is some evidence that early learning of music helps math and spatial skills so I do want to start early.

I might do some group music lessons as a preschooler, but nothing serious until grade 1. That was my rule as a piano teacher. Younger kids generally just don't have the desire/patience etc for all that practising. And I want my kid to love playing, not do it because mom says so.

@pinkcupcake: I play an instrument so I will watch for cues that she is ready

only if she asks! i played clarinet, piano and dabbled in guitar - and my brother can play drums and guitar - but I don't want to force anything.
our school district does recorders in music class in 4th grade, and they can choose to join band in 5th grade.

DH is a musician, so he will start teaching our LOs as soon as they express interest. I play piano, but not well enough to teach myself so we'll have to outsource piano lessons.

We started learning a musical instrument through our school music class beginning in the 1st grade, I believe. I played cello and piano. My sister played the flute and violin. We continued with private lessons until we were 11.

Very early. DH will be in charge of this, as music is his profession so he knows a lot more about it than I do.

We're enrolling C in piano and voice at 2. She'll hopefully start violin early too. I started playing at 7.
She's already extremely musically inclined, so I think its something she'll enjoy and be good at. She "plays" our keyboard and DHs guitars already. She can strum and knows how to hold and use a pick.

I started when I was six, I'm thinking that is a good age for DD to start, too.

I don't want to push her too young but I hope she takes an interest in an instrument. I play the violin and my husband plays the guitar and she loves it when we play for her. She also loves her Musical Munchkin class and is really good at keeping a beat already.

I'm hoping our kid takes after DH and not me aka the rhythmically challenged one. We will likely start them on lessons around three. DH loved the Tiger Mom book and is convinced masters of sport or music or any talent really need to start early.

LO is 14 months and we got her a little baby baby-grand for her birthday (the Melissa and Doug one!). Right now of course she just bangs on the keys, but she LOVES "playing", and we clap after she plays and give her lots of positive reinforcement.
We plan to start looking for a teacher around 2, or 3 at the latest.
I played violin for years, and hope to foster love of music early!

I have a friend who is a piano teacher, and LO has a top spot on her list when he is ready. She thinks that 3 might be a good age to start, but most of her students start around 4-5.

We are planning to start a string instrument and piano at 3, which was when I started.

DH and I both play various instruments, so we'll expose our baby to a lot of music and singing early on. I don't think that we'll start any lessons or formal training until probably upper elementary school unless there's sincere interest. That's when it was offered at our schools, and we both took to it really quickly and loved it. It's really expensive to purchase instruments for a fleeting interest when they're so young, so maybe cheaper garage sale finds for practice until they pick one (or a few) they're serious about.
