My LO won't let me swaddle her when she is awake (she screams if her arms aren't free) but she often wakes up if I try to swaddle her once she is asleep.
When do you put the swaddle on your LO? Awake before a nap or after they are already asleep?

When they start getting tired fussy...we wrap them up and usually they fall asleep pretty fast. It has kind ofbecome a sleep cue. They used to fight it, but now know whats coming.

When E was really little we could do it after he was asleep, now he wakes up if I try to do that. Usually I'll swaddle him now and then rock him or nurse him. He's starting to really hate it a lot more now, so it might be time to swaddle wean... but he still grabs at his face and wakes himself up if he's not swaddled.

We don't swaddle for naps, but at bedtime it's the first thing we do after pjs. Then, read a book, bottle, and bed. It's also a sleep cue now. She calms down immediately once we start swaddling.

When we swaddled for naps I would put it on just before he went into the crib (he was awake) and he would often get drowsy as I was swaddling.
For nights we would do bath, massage, diaper then swaddle. He would either get a bottle or nurse swaddled.

We do the same as @c.sassy... not for naps, but right before bedtime. But we don't nurse with it on because she usually takes a mean poo while nursing before bedtime.

She would scream at first when I put her in but within a few mintues of being swaddled with her soother she would calm down. I never tried swaddling her when she was asleep.

I usually try to put it on when he's drowsy. Most times he'll fall asleep but sometimes like tonight he didn't go down until 50 minutes later and I had to rock him. Yay. I can't wait to be done with the swaddle.... It's about time anyway.

I kept her arms free while feeding her and swaddled her once she started to look drowsy.

We only swaddle for night time sleeps but we put it on her before we do the last feed for the night. We use the Halo swaddles, so we put her in it but don't fasten the velcro folds across her arms until we're done feeding and burping her. She will sometimes fuss when we're doing up the velcro but as soon as she's all swaddled in, she immediately stops fussing.

For those of you who swaddle when your LO is still awake, do they fight the swaddle?
And for everyone, do your LOs try to escape the swaddle when they're sleeping?
My LO always manages to get her arms free by the time she wakes up. I wonder if this is her way of telling me that she doesn't want the swaddle! I just think she sleeps better/longer with it since she startles easily.

@sunny: Yes, she sometimes fights the swaddle but as soon as she's all swaddled up, she immediately calms down. And yes, she does try to escape the swaddle whilst sleeping, especially as she has discovered how yummy her hands taste and constantly wants them in her mouth! Her startle reflex is also quite strong so we find that swaddling her keeps her sleeping for longer and breaking an arm out of it generally doesn't wake her up unless she gets too cold. I don't take it as a sign she doesn't want to be swaddled...and until her startle reflex calms down, we will continue to swaddle at night!
