I've never gotten a save the date for a kiddo's birthday party, but just a FYI email to immediate family so they know not to make other plans that day makes sense. The parties I've been to, 3-4 weeks out for invites seems to be the norm.

I have also seen 3-4 weeks. I could see a longer lead time being necessary only around the holidays since there are so many other things going on.

I think 3-4weeks is enough notice. I have never seen a save the date before. That seems like overkill to me, yes.

Her party is at the end of April so not really a busy time of year so there's no reason to be terribly worried. But I'm a tad neurotic

I think I did 4-5 weeks. It was just close friends and family so they all pretty much knew when her birthday was, and her party was on her birthday anyway.
If it's a huge party and you're inviting OOT guests I think STD's are fine. For us, my only OOT guests were our siblings and I told them verbally when the party was going to be ahead of time.

@artbee: yea our OOT guests will be family as well. I'm definitely going to mention it to them again 2 months prior so they can start deciding if they're going to make the trip. My family is horribly last minute, drives me crazy!!!
I think I might just send an email out, nothing fancy, just to let people know we are having a party for her.
