I always repeat the word/sentence correctly, but I don't force them to repeat it. My son eventually corrected himself after hearing me repeat words or sentences correctly over and over again.

@lamariniere: @JoJoGirl: That's what I do too. Although we still have some sounds that are not correct so sometimes we'll practice (initiated through him though).

@Pumuckl: that's true, we do work on certain sounds with DD. She cannot say the "k" sound, so milk is "milt". Sometimes I do repeat those sounds and try to have her say them, but it's always just for fun.

At 4.5 we are actively correcting but it tends to be verb tense we are working on. For example she told us MLK was shotted. We talked through how the correct way to say he was shot. We are also working through double negatives. I don't want nothing else to eat.

My first is sensitive and while she's plenty caught up now she was a slow to pick up verbal skills. I did not correct everything she said because every sentence she said had lots of mistakes and I just wanted her to communicate. We had times when we focused on proper pronunciation and sentence structure but it wasn't all the time.

My second is super verbal so I started much earlier repeating things back correctly (she's also less likely to freeze up and stop talking bc she was corrected).

So I guess it depends onthe child ?

DD is pretty verbal so I will correct her. When she was younger I would correct her in more subtle ways like what other commenters suggested.

My BIL and SIL are both speech language pathologists and they always correct their kids. My SIL works with kids and I always hear her repeat, "let me hear your good f-sound" (or whatever) to her nieces and nephews. And I remember her saying it was hard for her to not focus on correcting her kids even though she knew things were developmentally normal.

From watching them I've been planning on correcting always, but not letting the kid get stressed out about it. They also show and explain to their kids how to place their tongue in their mouth to make certain sounds.

And their kids seriously have better elocution than some adults. It's a little freaky hearing a 2-year-old with perfect pronounciation.

LO is 2 years & 3 months. I think she is pretty advanced verbally so I don't feel the need to correct her with every little thing because she has a good handle on it for her age. For example, she always says, "I'm sad," not "I sad." She changes tenses appropriately, so like today I said, "Did you see that horse?" She responded, "Yes! I saw the horse. He was eating grass."

So the things that I don't correct are just cute stuff that I don't want to give up yet. Like she calls her headphones "my listens."

I haven't really had to. Occasionally they'll conjugate something incorrectly, using the correct rules: "she thinked" and I'll correct it when I hear it, once or twice, and it's locked in.

@Raindrop: I love that! There are definitely a few words they think are pronounced differently and I won't correct them, especially with my 2 year old! It's too cute.
