I heard or read somewhere (probably HB) that you shouldn't use sunscreen beyond the current season. I bought a few new bottles for our fam beach trip last month so I think we're stocked for the first half of summer; but need to throw out a few of last year's bottles.
What is "the rule" on sunscreen active ingredients? If there is an unopened bottle from last year, can I use it this year assuming protection level is up to par?

I pretty much never do! It's never caused a reaction or sunburn for me and I have sensitive skin. You can tell when it starts to separate...

@mrsjyw: check the expiration date - I still use it if expired on me but will get new stuff for the kids

Sometimes I will keep from one season to the start of the next season. Just to finish out the bottle in early spring but once the summer heat starts up, I buy fresh bottles.

I buy such expensive sunscreen for DD, I'll probably get new ones for her this summer and use last summer's on me!

@Charm54: @Mamaof2: yea there are dates, then I read somewhere that you shouldn't use it after one season! (I probably will though as long as within the dates!)

I use it as long as it isn't expired. Sometimes it has a weird texture after sitting in a drawer all winter, and if that's the case then I throw it away.

They have expiration dates. I would not use past that date. I've gotten burnt using old sunscreen.

I do as others above (new each season), and also toss liquids/creams if they sit out all day in the sun bc the texture gets funny. The most kills me but I won't risk effectiveness. Sticks I keep a bit longer.

I'm currently using one for lo I bought last summer since it was almost half full. I've always used sunscreens for myself until expiration, whether it's over a couple of seasons... seems fine to me..... Besides, the one I got for lo was kinda pricy so I want to use every last bit of it!

I tend to throw it at the end of the summer season as I never wear sunscreen other than summer. I found a tube I had forgotten in my linen closet... it expired in 2013!

DH insists on throwing them out after they expire. If it was up to me if probably keep them around forever
