How about now? Is now an option? Lol in reality hopefully in my 50s. My dad just retired and is in his late 50s. My mom retired in her early 60s.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
As soon as possible? Lol! Probably after all children get through college. I'm 32 now so that would be 55 if I don't have any more?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
My parents retired in their 40's and 50's....I'm thinking it would be great to teach some college courses for supplemental income when I retire! Hopefully 50's. Healthcare is an issue

I'm planning to SAH and go back to work in...... 5-10 years depending on how many kids we have (go back to work when they are in school!) And then maybe early 50s? I think that's when DH can retire from his job and get full pension, so I'd probably do the same!

Tomorrow.
But really, I'm not great at sitting at home, and I don't like to travel, soooo..... I'll probably work until the end! Haha
pomegranate / 3759 posts
Now. I just want to travel the world. But i have no money to do that!

Tomorrow! I wish! Still hoping to win a moderate sized lottery.

DH is 10 yrs older than me so he was saying he would retire at 65 and I said great - then I will retire at 55 so we can spend time together - he looked at me like I was crazy!

I'm not sure if I will ever fully retire. I plan on going into consulting once I reach retirement age.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@littlek: I kind of feel the same way. I don't know how I would feel not working/having projects. By the time I reach retirement age I hope I can keep working on projects that interest me or that I'm passionate about, but for fun without thinking about income, since I really enjoy what I do.
nectarine / 2272 posts
Ummmm, right this minute? I have worked at least part time, all year round, since i was 15. I need a break.

50's would be good so I still have the energy (and guts/balls) to do adventurous stuff!

50-55ish. Should be doable for us.
We'll probably never really "retire". DH will probably spend "full time" managing and maintaining our investment properties, and I will probably have a hobby job from home.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@DillonLion: nope. Mr.Lime plans to retire at 57.
At 60/61, I would like to retire from full time work. Unless I develop some hobbies I think I should work part time to keep me active.
honeydew / 7235 posts
I still like working (at 34 years old) - I'm such a weirdo. I'm hoping to retire at 60 or 63ish though. Then maybe ill start my own business and work whatever hours I want (I'm a graphic designer/art director)
pomegranate / 3863 posts
By 60? My grandpa retired at 73 (owned his own business) and has been lucky to still be alive and active at 94, but I know that's not the norm so I want to make sure I have enough time after retirement to really enjoy life.

I'd love to be able to retire when I'm 55, but realistically I'm just hoping to be able to retire by 65.
persimmon / 1404 posts
I have worked full time since I was 18, I would love to retire now!
Realistically though, I'm aiming for my 50s.
pineapple / 12793 posts
I don't think I will retire. I like what I do.
I'll probably cut hours way back and only work on projects that I want to work on but I don't see myself stopping.
pomegranate / 3355 posts
My goal is by 55. DH and I are working HARD now to make this happen. But only time will tell...
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
You guys scare me! I know where we are at financially at 30 and there is NO WAY we would be able to retire at 50/55.
Technically if I stay at my job, I would be eligible after 30 years, which would be when I'm 54 but I still wouldn't want to try to live off that for another 20 years!

Honestly, I don't think I can ever not work. I would want to go down to PT at some point, I think. Or maybe switch to a PT Volunteer position.

DH wants to retire at 55 from his current job and build sailboats. I think I'll work longer since my job is so flexible. I'd love to be a broker one day or teach courses to new agents.

I'm really young (early 20's) so my opinion can definitely change, but I don't really plan on ever retiring. I'm passionate about what I do--church ministries--and it's the type of thing that even if I wasn't doing paid ministry, I know I would be one of those older ladies who was still super-involved and on lots and lots of committees, so might as well stay on and get paid, especially if I transitioned back to a part-time ministry position like I'm in now (I plan to go full-time once I graduate with my masters). My dad is the type who has always been working towards retirement--he's 51 and just went to half-time and loves it so much more than full-time that he might stay at that for the time being. My mom is the type who loves her job and never would want to retire. I'm really the same way.

I agree with yesterday
DH and I plan/hope to retire in our late 50's so we have time to travel and such while we are still young.
coconut / 8861 posts
60's maybe. My parents retired, but lead a very full life with grandkids, consulting, etc. My dad kept on being called back to various consulting gigs because he's good at what he does. My mom was working on and off as an instructor before her mobility got limited. I want their kind of retirement. I don't want to be bored or unstimulated during it. Right now, they're doing a little getaway. So cool.

How are you all retiring in your 50's?
I hope to retire by 60 but realistically by 65 or the second I win the lottery!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
I'm really lucky that I'm in a business where retirement is usually more of a process than an event. So I would like to start slowing down in my mid fifties and just take it year by year and see how much I feel like doing.

Today??? Hahaha whenever my husband says we are financially good to. Since he's the finance guy, he will know when we are close to the point where we can retire.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@MamaMoose: Same here. I can start cutting my # of clients and that will reduce my hours.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
Just curious for everyone who wants to retire in their early 50s, do you worry about running out of money? Or do you have a pension and not worry about running out of money. Personally, I don't ever think I will be 100% comfortable retiring without making any money on the side. I'd be afraid I would run out of money and it's hard getting back in the job market once you leave.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@littlek: I think it's hard for people to really know now. But I do think that with a comprehensive financial plan you can get a good idea of when you are in a position where you are very unlikely to outlive your assets. The biggest risk to successful retirement is a long term care event, but with long term care insurance and responsible spending we can often let clients know when they can comfortably retire the way they want to.

I would like to retire from my day job at 50 and work a reduced schedule.
nectarine / 2771 posts
I don't think I'll ever fully retire until I'm physically not able to work. I hope when I'm 55/60 though, I can just focus on my private practice - see who I want, when I want, accept no insurance, and make $$$$. Haha.
