Charlie called another toddler a "baby" today, and his dad corrected Charlie and said, "No, he's a toddler."
Putting aside the futility of correcting a 21 month old's language usage (?!), when would you say a baby becomes a toddler?

I've often wondered about this myself. I think it's either when they start to walk (around 1 year old) or around two years old ('cause that's when they're officially in the "Toddler" sizes of baby clothes).

I think they are technically toddlers from age 1 - 3. Before 1, they are babies. After 3, they are preschoolers. Of course, if you have a 15 month old that's not walking yet, I would still consider that a baby!

I'm not sure there is a clear cut off...I still call Little G my baby, but he's not even technically a toddler any more...rather he's a...preschooler! Jeesh. I feel old.

I find the transition hard too. I think anything over 13 months is considered a toddler. In my books, if a baby walks then toddler it is.

I heard from somewhere that they officially transition from infant to toddler when they start to walk regularly and confidently. I guess that makes sense, since they're "toddling" around.

I agree with previous posters-when a baby begins to "toddle" around, aka walk, to me, that is considered a toddler.

If I recall correctly, Baby Center emails started referring to my LO as "toddler" after turning 1 and a "preschooler" after turning 3.

This made me laugh because my daughter and I were looking at pictures this weekend. I pointed to one of her dad- "Who is that?" She smiled and yelled "Daddy!" Then I pointed to a picture of me- "Who is that?" She smiled and yelled "Fishie!" Then I pointed to a picture of her from a few months ago- "Who is that?" She looked at me for a minute and said, "Baby!"
I still call her my baby a lot, though, but I think the idea of babies is very interesting to small children. My cousin's daughter is a year older than my daughter and was very concerned when I called my daughter baby. She said that my daughter could walk and talk, so she isn't a baby. I totally got schooled by a two year old!

To me anything after 12 months. Or when they start walking.
Wow, can't believe they actually corrected Charlie.

I think if a baby toddles, then they're a toddler. Although, my mind they are still so young when they first walk and seem like babies until closer to 2, and toddler clothes sizes do start at 2T. Either way, that guy had some nerve correcting your Charlie!
