I bought 2 carseat toys and both don't really fit so I put the same reasons for return for both. One was $8 something and one was $10 something. For the cheaper one they just said don't bother sending it back but the more expensive one they're asking for me to send it back. Is it based on monetary value??

I am not sure. I've been told I could keep a $15 item but I had to return a $4 item. Maybe it depends on the seller!

Is the company/seller paying the shipping for the return? If so, the actual cost of the item may not be worth the freight back.

I'm not sure either, because we bought diapers that didn't fit right so I asked for a refund prepared to ship it back but they told me to keep it and refunded me the money. So .... now I have a brand new box of diapers that Amazon told me to keep. Crazy.

No clue. I once got the wrong size shirt and they told me to keep it and they refunded the money($25). And just recently i ordered something and one of the pieces in it was a duplicate, that I have to return($28)

So far the only thing they've let me keep is an $8 book. It was a potty training book that I got for D because it was about having a super power (being a Super Pooper). But when I read through it, I really didn't like it because it showed the kid getting a party when he learned to poop in the potty, and I didn't want D to expect a party because NO. But he loves the book now, so...free book, I guess. I'll deal with the party thing later.

I think consummable items, they let you keep. I got a ton of chocolates as gifts during Christmas, and they told me to keep them when I tried to return it

We got a package the other day that was for the former home owners. They told us to keep it, because it had already been reported not delivered? It was a bumpo, though I don't know how much they cost.

I was refunded for a box of diapers and told to keep it.
I also was recently refunded for a package of containers (several were chipped) and they told me to toss them, refunded me, and told me to reorder (I couldn't because it was an add-on item).

I ordered a $20 pair of slippers for LO from Amazon and they arrived with a hole on the seam. I put in for an exchange and Amazon sent me the exact same pair again. That's when they gave me a refund and told me to keep them because clearly they wanted me to have them lol. Luckily it was just a small hole that I was able to patch so LO ended up with a free pair of slippers. But it makes me wonder how many people get damaged goods sent to them that have already been returned by others.

I received a broken glass dish that they let me keep and then overnighted me a replacement. But then another time, I returned LOs broken Marpac white noise machine and they wanted it back when they sent a replacement. She said to figure out what happened to it but who knows. Very happy with the service both times though. I looooove Amazon.

The only thing I've ever been allowed to keep was a $6 kids book. I've had to return everything else.
Once someone sent an amazon gift card to my email address by accident (the person they meant to send it to has a really similar email address). I used to get emails for this person all the time so I asked her if she knew the gift giver and it was her own father! He was able to contact amazon and sort it out so I never tried to use the gift card, but I sort of wonder if it would still have worked.

@snowjewelz: be careful on the free returns items! I recently tried to return a piece of jewelry that was "free returns" and noticed that if I had UPS pick it up from me, they were deducting $6-$10 from my refund. That's not free!
it was only free if I took it to UPS myself - fortunately we've got one a few blocks away.

@snowjewelz: We actually don't want one (which was what alerted me that it wasn't for us, since I didn't think to check that our name was on it before we opened it). But we have a friend who's pregnant and just a month ahead of me, so planning to gift it to her. She doesn't need to know it was free!

@MapleMoose: yep, this happened to me the yesterday. I recieved a pair of work boots that have scuff marks along the side of the shoe, like they've been scuffed trying them on. the soles are fine. the box was a bit mangled as well. considering if I should make a complaint to amazon but I can't quite be bothered. previously I've been credited for items arriving a day or two late, and have had duplicate items sent in the same box (yay it was nars lipstick!)

I got a free laptop about 4 years ago! DH ordered one, they sent two. And they let us keep it, so it is mine

We had a toy (talking book) that didn't work, I think it was around $15 and they told us to keep and refunded the $$. It sat around the house for months or years and DH messed with the battery at some point and got it working.

@snowjewelz: yes, but not until you're actually going through the return process. If you are seeing 0.00 I'm sure it's fine! This may have been sold and shipped by a storefront NOT Amazon, but it was Prine eligible, so IDK...just something to look out for I guess!
