Ds's 1st bday is two weeks away. We are having a little party and everyone keeps asking what to get him. He really isn't into toys, but if he were to get something what would be a good, worthwhile gift? I can never get him to play with toys for a while here at the house...he's happy pushing a diaper box around!

Does he have blocks? Musical instruments? Trucks and cars? These seem to be things my son got into around that time.

a ball pit from good ole Target
We got this one as a gift from a friend. I like it b/c it is like a basketball net at the top too. I was tempted to pass on because it was in such great condition but ended up using duct tape to cover the holes this summer and turned it into a mini-pool.

The one we had actually had balls similar to the one in the picture and couldn't be swallowed. Anyway, it was fun and I didn't see any danger potential.

How about toddler furniture? Some table and chairs, a little armchair, or an art easel would all be useful in time. Books.

What about a slide? This time of year I start thinking about finding gross motor anything to stock up for winter! Ditto to.the ideas of a climber, ride on toy and easel. I find one to be a little tricky because they are sort of in between toy stages (?) so I give gifts that can be used a little further down the road but still by a one year old.

He will actually get into all these things in no time! Books are good, too.
Cars/trucks that he can either ride or push will be a hit, too.
The fisher price little people stuff is good for that age, too...DS got a barn and it just got packed away after he turned 5. I'm saving it for the next kid. It's been a great toy for him for many years.

These are all great ideas! Thanks! I guess I'm afraid he'll get a "big ticket" item and won't play with it. Well, I guess it's not that big a deal since he and lo2 will be so close in age though now that I think about it!

For big ticket stuff, if you don't already have one, a learning table is super fun around a year of age.
Another idea is the anywhere chair, but in honesty, my son didn't get into that until he was about 2.

for first bday we asked for small items (same situation as you- just not "into" anything yet). Like blocks, tub toys, a baby doll, wood puzzles with big knobs, etc.

Books! My toddler is much more interested in books than toys (for now, anyways).

What about memberships to local things? We've asked for zoo, aquarium, or children's museum memberships for our boys birthday, and have really enjoyed them!

I 2nd the step2 buggy suggestion. DD got hers for Christmas (1 month before her 1-year bday), and she is STILL obsessed with it - she's 2.5 years old now! We use it practically every day when we take her to the park, in lieu of a stroller. She likes having control of her vehicle.
You can never have too many books, and I think play food is a fun gift too.

@cascademom: For the kiddie chairs and table, I'd just go to Ikea. It's cheap and pretty sturdy. As for armchairs, I know a lot of ppl love the Pottery Barn Anywhere Chairs. We don't have a PBK, so we ended up getting LO a little armchair that matches our couch. It's not as cute, but it's leather and super easy to clean and sturdy!

Books! Books are always great!
We got our LO an activity cube and an anywhere chair . . . I have already given her the cube (I couldn't wait, lol!) and the chair is on its way.

Activity cube, books, classical music CDs (classical kids series is awesome, i highly recommend) gift certificate for Carter's so I can pick him up something for fall. Those were my favourite gifts.

I second and third @autumnlove @Mrs. High Heels We got the step2 whisper buggy in blue and not only does LO love it (she's 16 months now) but all the kids on the playground love it (up to 3, maybe 4 years old).

We are getting my LO an activities cube and some books, for family I have suggested puzzles, books, mega blocks, anything that she will grow into!

Well, there's all kinds of toys that your LO will be excited about over the next year. There are a lot of good suggestions on here already. If a lot of people are asking though, I would just suggest books as a great gift. It's nice to make a little library for your LO, and before you know it he'll be begging you to read him books.

I second the suggestion for books! It's something you can all keep enjoying for several years and build a library for any future LOs if you plan on having any more.
